Koyi Sushi AYCE — Restaurant in Montclair

For a place that had no customers, the wait staff was very slow to service me. I went in alone on a Monday afternoon, 2:30pm. On the menu I pointed out that I wanted to come in for that happy hour price listed at $24.99. The lady tells me that the price has changed and now it's $29.99. Not sure why their menus haven't been updated, but that threw me off. Once I sat down, I took a look at their small menu. And was ready to order after 5-10 minutes of being sat down. Again, nobody else in the restaurant except me. The man at the sushi bar look at me and said hi and that's when the waitress came to ask me whether I was doing AYCE or not. As I informed her that I was doing AYCE even at their falsely advertised price, she let me know that all I had to do was mark down items on the menu, as if she had given me a pen to do so already. At this point, the wait time, the misled information, and the misinformed way to order all threw me away to not want to dine in.

If you wish to come here, please know that their AYCE is $29.99 and might be a wait to be served even if there isn't anyone else in the restaurant.

The food? I can't tell you whether or not if it's good. If the service isn't good, I'm more than happy to dine...

So went to this place which is now known as VIP Sushi because it is under new management, and just like prior management the staff was rude. We had dinner on the most notorious holidays of all times, Valentine’s Day, and we were ignored for a good 20 min at the door. No one acknowledged us or even made eye contact to offer us a table until a server eventually came by and semi wiped down a table and seated us. We decided with the all you can eat but they never brought us what we ordered and they only served ya twice in the whole night. It was very disappointing because considering my husband and I had long days at work and were so looking forward to this night, to be sadly disappointed with the service of this joint. This place is committing high way robbery for hard working individuals. Our night almost ended with a $75 bill because they charged for 3 all you can eats when it was really two for my husband and I and our 3 year old son who had nothing to eat yet they were still wanting to charge for him. The server eventually brought the bill down to $50 but only because I complained that we were only served twice. Please save your money and do not go to this place. Very rude servers and awful...

First of all, the prices here are affordable enough to make me become a regular. The staff is very kind, ready to help and attentive. Relaxing sushi bar. The Avocado Bomb was very delicious. Nice and crispy on the outside, lots of flavor inside with the sweet eel sauce on top, it was perfect. Eel/Spicy Tuna Hand Roll with eel sauce and carrots is my go-to. Always satisfying and glad this place could deliver. The Strawberry Tempura Ice Cream was good, I would like a bit more to go with it though. I do believe some fruit added would have really made the dish. Of course it would cost more, but well worth it for the price it already comes at now. The Salmon Skin Salad was refreshing and crunchy with eel sauce on top, I really recommend the sauce. The seaweed salad was very refreshing as well and had a nice flavor. The only negative was the portion was small. The decor was ok, maybe new paint and consistent colors for the walls and dimming the lights (smart lights) is the only thing I would say could help the atmosphere. To conclude, I would recommend this place to anyone. It's great all around and hasn't disappointed. Thank you...
