Mercado in Montclair, NJ, deserves a five-star rating for its exceptional qualities that make it a standout breakfast/brunch/lunch destination. The spaciousness of the place is a game-changer, accommodating our oversized stroller with ease, allowing for an stress-free dining experience.
The friendliness of the staff further enhances the overall visit, creating a welcoming atmosphere that resonates throughout. Now, onto the most important stuff, the food – the avocado toast is a symphony of flavors, and the cold brew coffee is a refreshing companion to any meal. I do recommend adding bacon to the avocado toast.
However, the true stars were the pastel de natas and bolas de Berlim. Being from Portugal these are without a doubt, hands down the best in NJ that I have had, where there is a huge Portuguese community with many different cafes where’s you can find these pastries. These pastries from Mercado were so good that they transported my taste buds straight to Portugal, delivering an authentic and nostalgic experience.
Finally as a suggestion, it would be fantastic if Mercado could consider adding changing tables in the bathrooms. This thoughtful addition would greatly benefit parents with babies, enhancing the family-friendly aspect of this already outstanding establishment.
Overall, Mercado truly excels in providing not just a meal, but a memorable experience for all guests. My family and I look forward to going there again in the very...
Read moreI placed an order in person during my lunch break, and as a pescatarian I do not eat meat. I originally wanted to get the chicken sandwich for my boyfriend and a salmon wrap for myself. I changed my mind and ordered a chicken bowl for him and the salmon wrap for myself. Trusting that their employee would take the meal down properly, I waited for my order and left to quickly make it back to work. When I get back, I realize I have two meat meals. I call and they tell me they will make the salmon wrap. As I am working, my boyfriend picks up the meal and the manager/owner tells him “we don’t give free meals.” As if he was sent to pick up free food? In addition, the lady my boyfriend is speaking with is telling him I should check my meal before leaving. So, you’re expected to always check your meal. There is always room for miscommunication, and that seems to have happened here. Instead of addressing it properly, they’re quick to assume we wanted a free meal from them.Horrible management/service, and extremely unprofessional. FYI: This establishment needs to learn how to properly adjust these situations and not be quick to think people want “free food.” Lastly, I receive a call from Mercado asking about the situation and justifying their “we don’t give free food comment” because “a lot of...
Read moreAfter wanting to try Mercado for a while, I visited today for the first time. It was very crowded as it always has been everytime I've passed by in the past. The first thing I noticed was its cafeteria style vibe, with a twist of European charm. It's very confusing at first to figure out how the service works. There is no table service. The menu is posted on the wall, but it wasn't until an employee came over with a paper copy that we saw the full menu and learned that certain items are not made on Sundays. It appears that there is a line for food and a separate area to order coffee, but it's all one ordering line. The food was pretty good but the highlight was the chocolate smoothie. It was probably the best smoothie I've ever had. Service was impersonal and lacking friendliness. It also had its flaws as my friend ordered a vanilla iced coffee and was served a regular iced coffee. All in all, it's a place worth a try. I would recommend avoiding peak times. We were lucky enough to dine outside, as the inside was very loud and...
