I have been to a good bit of seafood restaurants and I haven’t been here for about 20 years. It was the first time for 3 of my friends. This place does have great views. Does have cold beer. But for a visitor out of town I can’t say this is the place to go to.
Customer service is something that I highly admire and quality of food next or this. Shem Creek Bar & Grill offers spectacular atmospheres and views but what they lack is genuine staff that truly loves what they are doing. Now don’t get me wrong we got served but there is a difference between service and placing silverware down and handing us menus. A simple fix to this would be training servers to look at every new group of visitors as their own family and as if it was their first time. Definitely got the feel this is a place where locals can come hang out and it’s more of the locals who are use to the service than the new people who are not.
My overall experience was affected from the long waits for increasing in time as in order: drinks, appetizers & main meal.
Another issue was the knowledge of our server with answering legitimate questions about the menu. One way to work on this is the ability to train employees to have their favorites of every type of style offered and work from there. So when I ask how something is on the menu I don’t expect an answer that is vague or unfocused.
I want to give Shem creek more stars but my overall experiences places this location at 2-3 stars. When I went to talk to management a lady who was setting tables said she was management. I talked to her about my meal and she said that’s how it is. I asked her about our server she said that how the server acts and it’s their personality. I was honestly truly unimpressed. This rating has earned a firm 1.
I don’t know if Angie ever will look at this or Jason replies. But this overall experienced is truly not good. I asked to talk to the manager and was told she won’t respond. I understand how this process works but truly unhappy about it all.
Pros: Great views Cold beer
Cons: Long wait for food “kitchen is slammed” Customer service
What can’t you do as the owner? work on training employees about the menu and have them love some aspects of the meals offered. have employees great the tables immediately and offer crackers for the long wait for food I have looked at other reviews it seems long wait is an issue here for some of visitors who expect faster service. This can only be fixed with increasing the kitchen output. Which can be done with some hard work but needs to be looked at. review the quality of the food being served come in here and order everything. Look at how you like it. Fix it from there. hire a legitimate management staff, if I want to have managers who pretend to be mangers I’ll go to a Chinese buffet. I want legitimate people who care about their customers experience. food wise improve the recipes. The shrimp boil I got was served in a cold aluminum plate with dry shrimp and sausage and one corn and no potatoes. When I asked the server he said there should be three. Am I dining at KFC? I don’t want to be told how many potatoes are supposed to be in a boil dish that cost $20+

Read moreToday I decided that for an early Mother’s Day dinner I wanted to go here. I had heard good things and I was super excited. I made reservation and today we drove there the 45 minutes. We arrived and our waiter Dave was friendly and very knowledgeable. We order our drinks and he had great suggestions. We order our appetizers and when they come our they were both delicious. But our drinks for $12 are small and very water down. So very disappointed. We have been to many different restaurants around this area since moving here and this is the first place where our drinks turned out to be so water down. Then our dinners come out.
I order the grilled seafood trio, with corn on the cob. First of all I was not offered butter for my corn it was just plain. No sauces for my seafood just plain not even a slice of lemon. Everything was ok, but my corn was ice cold, almost like they took it out of the fridge and put it on my plate. Yuck. I told Dave who said he would get me another one, but I did not get it till way after I was done with my dinner, unfortunately after taking the first bite I could tell the outside was hot but the middle ice cold. Yuck. By this time Dave had told us that he was bringing us more water 4 different time. No water yet.
My husband order the bacon cheeseburger. As he is allergic to shell fish. Dave said he would add that note when putting the order in. He also asked for no lettuce or tomatoes on his cheeseburger, just plain. When it come it had no cheese, no bacon but it did have the lettuce and tomatoes as well as burned buns. When he told Dave, he said he would go get him the bacon and cheese. He then return to tell us that they had run out of bacon and as soon as it was ready they would send it out. I truly expected for a so call higher end restaurant to send a new cheeseburger just the way my husband had order it. We waited and waited and as just as the rest of us had almost finished our dinners Dave brings a plate with extra crispy bacon and a slice of cheese and no new buns. He told Dave that they forgot his new buns and Dave said he would go get them. I told my husband to send it all back and get a new cheeseburger as by that time it was all cold, he did not want to wait again so he waited for his buns and eat the cold cheeseburger after we all had finished our dinner. Still no water.
I understand having a bad night in the kitchen, but Dave should had had better since and reorder that cheeseburger. It was terrible service. We have had bad kitchen experiences before but the manager and waiter usually work together to try and make things better so that we as customer come back. The experience here was terrible. Dave did offer a small piece of key lime pie for the 4 of us to share as an am sorry. But then I had to asked for new forks for all of us. When it was brought out we were asked who the pie was for? Really??? We will never go back or recommend this place it fail on so many levels. Like I said I understand bad night, mistakes happen but when you are treated like they don’t care about your experience then they don’t deserve for you to either go back or recommend. It was such of wast of $160. Yes, it was a very expensive night for good appetizers, shrimp and grits and a...
Read moreMe and my wife were visiting the Charleston, SC area this last weekend (6/21/2024 - 6/22/2024) and a local in ther area recommended we come here to Shem Rock Crab House in Mt. Pleasant. Overall atmosphere was nice and view of the water is lovely. We came at a good time (around 6pm I think that Friday), so only had to wait about 15 mins. Temp inside the restaurant was ok, but if we sat beside a sunny window, it would have been to hot for me in there. We had a family of five sit next to us, they sat down about 10 mins after we were seated and they ordered about about 10 mins-ish after we had already ordered, and they received all there food for their whole family several mins before ours ever came out. Just found that odd. But no "big deal," just odd. Me and my wife started off with a few of their Grilled Oysters McClellanville. I hate oysters, but these were good and I would recommend. For dinner my wife ordered the Soft Shell Crab Sandwich. I'd say it was also good and I loved the remoulade sauce that came with it. I personally ordered their so called 'World Famous' Steampot Crab House Crab Pot, their most expensive steampot (about $50 I think) with all the fix'ns. My issues with the restaurant are specifically focused on this item purchased (since it is the most expensive and 'fancy' steampot). The flavor was good, that I won't complain about. However, even though the order was supposed to have shrimp in there, there were no shrimp. Their andouille sausage in the steampot was sliced thinner then bologna meat at a grocery store (not lying on that) and they only gave a few pieces of it. I've never seen such cheapness with andouille sausage in a steampot before in all the years I've eaten these things across the nation. The same cheapness carried over with the potatoes: barely any. I finished my meal starving. I've never went to a steampot place before and felt like I needed to order a whole new meal to feel full. The corn was a whole corn on the cob so that was nice and very flavorful. The Alaskan snow crab / dungeness crab / & mussels were about what I'd expect at other places as far as portion. I complained about no shrimp and they at least gave me about $5 (might have been $7) off the overall steampot price, which I guess is better than nothing but I'm disappointed the manager didn't want to address the issue with me but just sent the server to handle the issue. Would have been nice to complain about the portion sizes but I guess the manager didn't want to hear any of that, on that night. I left hungry and would not go back. Again, flavor was good. No issue there. Just the portion size in the actual meal is a huge issue for me if I'm cashing out my money on a vacation, if it's one of the most expensive things to purchase there, and I felt like I was eating at a cheap uncle's house and that he felt his sausage and potatoes were expensive like gold or something. Very disappointing. I want to leave a place full, not thinking about how I need to stop at a fast food place and order a whole meal just to feel like I actually ate something (esp after spending $50 on that 'meal'). We ate at several places all over town while we were there and that's they only place I left hungry. Very disappointing and would not give...
