Casa Lupe - Though I live in San Jose, and, more in the south eastern part, I hopped on a bus to downtown, and, took the lightrail to Mt View. Probably an hours trip altogether, but well worth the motive of attending one of my two favorite Mexican restaurants - the 'Casa Lupe.' It's one of a chain, sprinkled elsewhere in the Peninsula. My introduction to this beautiful laid-out restaurant, was in Los Altos, going as far back as the '70s.' My only other favorite (Mexican restaurant), that takes a close second, is called, 'Station 55,' located just around the corner of 5th, and, Monterey Rd., in the old town of Gilroy. Getting off the lightrail in Mt View., I had to walk many blocks to get there (Casa Lupe), but, time passed quite quickly, as the entire street of Castro, is dedicated to pretty much nothing but restaurants, and, bars, and, a whole lot of lights galore, you'd almost think it was Christmas. The street abounded with tables, and chairs, and, people all seeming to be, in a partying mood. But, there were shops and botiques, as well - a couple that came to mind - is one with photographs peering out through the window, of old San Francisco, San Mateo, and, Palo Alto, and, OMG, if it isn't Keeano Reeves, dressed up as probably a 18th century officer in the English Royal Guard. Another store, featured actual sewing machines of different periods, such as 1881. Wow! And then, stepping up, to a 1920, 1925, and, 1957. The various models, put you in mind, of the annual car changes that go on in the car industry. Well, at last, I arrive! Ah! How wonderful to be back. The outer wall was decorated in traditional Mexican attire. You at first, come into the pateo - very nicely laid out, and, no different in style inside. And yet . . . even though it was a little brisk outside, I chose to sit in the pateo's corner, that looked to the outside lights, and ferns, firelamps, lanterns, and, motifs in the center, surrounded by greenery salamanders. And, maybe you could spot a third, if you take my punnery hint. Inside, the tables are covered in brown leather, with stylish, colorful placemats, and, cushioned wooden chairs at their sides. I asked at first, for a cup of coffee, making no mention as to it being hot. This is the place where you can get a guaranteed hot cup of coffee. The time was 7:45, I noted - well within the 9 o'clock closing time, and soon also, I was well warmed up to accept my entrèe - the 'Ranchero' - 2 enchaladas (choice of beef or chicken). I chose the beef. And, of course, accompanied by the usual rice and refried beans, with, no less then a whisp of sour cream - to top it off, and, on a plate so hot you have to wonder why its not glowing a vibrant red color. And, it was absolutely, exquisitely, delicious . . as always. The whole meal, and coffee, being a pleasant $25. I was tempted on the flan, for desert, but it seemed just a bit pricey, at $9. This would be the place to order it. But then, I'm really not a big dessert eater. I was quite content, just to hold the line where I was at. Boy!! . . what a great meal! So, for a real tasty Mexican treat, and delight, at a very classy restaurant, you just have to come and visit, Casa Lupe, located at 459 Castro, (just 2½ blocks down from El Camino, on the right side), in Mt. View. Almost a stone's throw from the Civic Center, and, The Center for the Performing...
Read moreThis is a bold Mexican-American restaurant that's situated in an excellent spot. They're known for offering complimentary tortilla chips and salsa, which is a lovely touch. The drinks here, particularly the margaritas, are potent and delicious. They have an outdoor seating area that's charming and comfortable - a nice place to relax.
When it comes to food, I often opt for the carne asada burrito. This dish is pretty big, with generous amounts of beef, rice, and beans packed inside. The accompanying sauce is spicy and might surprise you with its heat, but it's really flavorful and adds a great taste to the burrito.
This restaurant stands out as one of the better sit-down Mexican eateries in Northern California. However, if you're hoping to find traditional, homestyle Mexican cuisine here, you might feel let down. The food here is more Mexican-style with a distinct American twist. It seems designed to suit American taste preferences and it does a good job in that regard.
It's important to approach this place with the right expectations. Don't come searching for the authentic rustic flavors of Mexican food because that's not their specialty. What they do best is serve up Mexican dishes that Americans enjoy. So, if you're in the mood for some good Mexican-American food and strong margaritas, this is a great place...
Read moreI. LOVE. THIS. PLACE.!!!! This is a cozy little restaurant that is festively decorated and the ambience is that of happy diners. The food is always fresh & hot & delicious! It's never too spicy. It's always just right. I'm getting hungry now (9:15 a.m.) just thinking about it. The two ladies who work here, Myra & Sabrina, should own this place! They're always here, like owners & care about their customers. They're friendly & they get your order right, no matter how picky you might be. Plus, they've been doing it such a long time, they have a good rhythm together and are just as efficient when it's super busy or when it happens to be a slow time. Besides the food, these two ladies are what makes the restaurant as great as it is!
They have indoor and outdoor seating, and if it happens to be cold outside, they have a propane heater outside to warm you up.
If you happen to find yourself in Mountain View and are wanting a good Mexican meal, this is the place...
