A treasure of the northern suburbs. Greg’s Frozen Custard has some of the best quality desserts in a fun atmosphere. They have your standard chocolate and vanilla flavors as well as daily specials. There’s a large selection of sundaes and toppings that there’s definitely something for everyone.
Greg’s does not have indoor dining, there’s a walk up window and plenty of covered picnic tables and a few benches alongside the building. The entire place has a 1950s retro aesthetic and they’re often playing music from that era as well. The entire package is comforting and something to look forward to.
My go to sundae is the dusty road, which is vanilla custard with hot fudge topped with malt powder and a cherry. You can’t go wrong with the Elvis or the Fluffernutter as well. They have a selections of shakes and malts that always hit the spot as well like the dreamsicle or lucky charms shake. You can get treats like a banana split which is massive and with fresh toppings.
You can typically get a calendar of their monthly flavors on social media so you can plan out any special flavors. It’s worth checking out so you don’t miss anything that piques...
Read moreGood old Greg did not disappoint. I tried all top Frozen Custard shops in MI, IL, WI and MO. Now, good news is Greg is selling real frozen custard. Many shops sell soft serve or frozen yogurt under the name of frozen custard. There are three tests to a good frozen custard. Test 1. The machinery. If you are getting your custard from a device like a beverage fountain where they hold the cup underneath and fill. You are not getting frozen custard my friends! Test 2. The spoon. If the frozen custard is served with filmsy a** soft spoon that easily bends, that is not a custard you are spooning. Test 3. The texture! The most important test. Now spoon your custard and look into your cup, if the spot you just scooped has sandy looks then that is a low quality custard. If that scooped area is silky smooth and flat as the surface of a quartz countertop then this is good news! these guys are using some egg yolks in their recipee to make real frozen custard. Greg's custard passed all three tests. It is definitely not as good as Kopp's Frozen Custard in WI but so far the best in IL that I found....
Read moreI'm so mad at myself I didn't come to this place sooner.
My wife and I moved to the area several years ago and we hesitated to give this place a try because we heard about other places which left us disappointed.
It hard to put into words why this place is so good, but I'll do my best. The ice cream is thick. You get the equivalent of a 'Blizzard' and you'll be happy. The closest comparison I can make is it's a lot like a concrete mixer from Culvers, or something you would get from Kopps Frozen Custard in Wisconsin for those who know that place.
What's nice is if you live in Mundelein and you want some good ice cream you don't have to drive all the way to Culvers. You can stay local and support a small business which makes me feel even better despite the calories I'm taking in.
The only bummer is the location. While the building itself is nice, and there is plenty of room for parking this place can be easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Not sure how long its' been around but my family and I hope it will be a mainstay. We'll be returning...
