I have been to Mexico Tipico quite a few times. When I first went there a year ago, the food was OK and it was similar to the type of Taqueria that you would find in California. However my last experience at Tipico a few days ago, was a very very poor one. I walked in to pick up a Phone order, and I was told by a very snotty rude cashier that it would be up soon. It seemed that she didn't speak English well, and it annoyed her that she had to call someone to translate. I realized she was the same girl who had taken half of my order over the phone and then handed the phone to someone else. I had figured that she was probably busy at the time but it might have been because she had a hard time understanding me. I waited about 10 minutes and then got my order. I always check my order just to make sure. I ordered my Asada fries without cheese. The rest of my order was complete, but they added cheese and cream to one I requested without it. I explained to the server who brought the food out to me that I had ordered it without cheese, and I had repeated to the girl who answered the phone that I wanted no queso on the last order. I am Hispanic, and I do speak Spanish, and she said she understood me. So they said they would fix my order and took it back. I waited another 15 minutes and they brought my food out and again it again had cheese. I thought this was a language barrier of some kind and I explained to her that I was lactose intolerant so I didn't want any cream or cheese on there. The young girl upfront, who took my order over the phone, said out-loud and angrily where I could see her that I had never said that I didn't want cheese only that I didn't want any cheese dip. I wasn't aware that they had cheese dip, and that there was a difference between no queso meaning no cheese. I need to also mention that as I was waiting 45 minutes for my order to be corrected. I noticed that the floors were filthy. I don't mean just messy filthy I mean filthy as in when you walk on them they're so greasy that your foot slips. I can't imagine what would keep them from cleaning their floors on a regular basis so that greasy buildup wouldn't happen. It seems that cleanliness is not an issue to them in the front of the restaurant so I cringed to think about how filthy it would be where they are preparing the food. I wanted to just ask for my money back on the order that was repeatedly incorrect, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that a language barrier is why they kept getting my order wrong. I didn't see a manager or owner to complain in person only the two servers and two other young girls behind the counter including the rude short cashier. Anyhow the rudeness, athe general filthiness of the restaurant and the fact that their food is mediocre at best will be the reason me and my family won't be coming back. If you want dry asada meat, bad Mexican rice, a filthy atmosphere and rude low class service Tipico...
Read more2024 REVIEW - Love the updated dining/sitting area BUT PLEASE give those bathrooms some TLC! The ladies room desperately needs it, one stall STILL doesn't even have a toilet seat. I'm surprised it's so unkept considering the remodel/update.
It's been 11 months since my last visit, and although there are a few new faces in the staff the food is still spot on.
The chiles rellenos were large and filling. Sopes were fantastic as usual. The sopa de res, large and delicious The roasted chicken leg meal was fantastic too!
Would still recommend a visit!
2023 REVIEW - WOW, WOW, WOW!! What an amazing authentic Mexican establishment!
We were in the area looking to dine at another restaurant however they were closed, so we popped into Mexico Tipico. What a great choice it turned out to be!
1st of all, they offer the best tasting Champurrado (think hot chocolate but much better) in Middle Tennessee i have yet to find! It's everything it needs to be and hits all the spots in your belly and soul to give you that cozy, warm feeling.
It was a cold fall night so we were on the hunt for some soup - my husband tried the birria soup, it was one of the best he's ever had, it was beaming with authentic flavors, it is served with tortillas and the portion was huge, the price was great too!
I went with the sopa de res (beed soup) the flavors are omg so yummy, all the vegetables were tender and the broth was very well seasoned, it's served with a small portion of rice and cilantro, fresh diced onions and jalapeños and tortillas, very large portion and priced fair as well.
The kids ordered chicken tacos - they enjoyed the flavor of sauce the chicken is cooked in, and it was served with spicy pickled carrots.
We've been back 3x since our initial visit with friends - we've tried the al pastor tacos, the asada, the lengua, barbacoa & carnitas all have been consistently flavorful and portions are good for the price.
Some other items we tried and have enjoyed were the mulitas, sopes, asada fries & quesadillas.
The house hot sauces are fantastic too!
Although the guacamole was flavorful and chunky, i felt the portion was not fair for the price charged. Truly my only food complaint.
Another complaint is the bathrooms, they are in desperate need of TLC, one of the women's stalls doesn't even have a seat, and the smell emanating from the pipes is very strong and awful.
Would absolutely recommend dining in over take out, sit down, and enjoy your hot meal.
Went back a few days later and tried out some breakfast options, of course they knocked it out of the park on that too. My favorite hearty breakfast is the...
Read moreI am no judge of authenticity of mexican food and I am reviewing based on the tacos and wow for 99 cents these tacos are a steal. I had 2 carnitas tacos and 2 lengua tacos (which are 1.99 which is typical street taco prices around here). And wow the simple flavor of both of these are great. First time having lengua tacos and I really enjoyed the experience with tender pieces of meat. The carnitas had an incredible taste but mine were just a tad dry but not enough for me not to love them and i prefer them this way but this may be a problem for some. Now the salsa verde was a great compliment to the tacos and i tried the regular salsa(hot sauce, red salsa, comes with the tacos to go) and it was way better than I expected as I normally just eat salsa verde.
Some downsides, limited meat options (steak, chicken, carnitas, pastor (spicy pork), lengua, beef and thats about it. Going to have to go elsewhere for my chorizo. And this may be a downside to some but English is not their first language so I wouldnt try to get too particular about what you want and just stick to the menu. Its not a problem to me.
Upsides. Great flavor, an absolute steal of a price even when the 99 cent special goes away they will be 1.50 which is still great. Everything else there is less than 10 dollars.
These tacos rival what I have had growing up i areas of Dallas, Texas.
100% give this place a shot. If you don't like it, there are other options in the area.
I'll update with photos on my next visit. But its a counter service place where you order at the counter (for here or to go) and then you clean up after yourself. Dont be messy people.
TL:DR: Great tacos, cheap prices. Give it a shot. Right off the interstate for all you travelers...
