Came with wife and son for breakfast today. We've been in roughly 6 times over the last year.
We were seated next to the door which has happened before. As always, that corner is subjected to a blast of outside air whenever more than one person enters. A request to be moved shortly before ordering (50% open tables) was reluctantly granted. I figured that I'd tip generously.
They seemed a little behind on meals but were kind enough to get my sons meal to us early. My wife ordered the carrot cake french toast. The banana bread french toast arrived about 35 minutes later. We laughed about it and told the server (mid 30's-40's, reddish-brown hair, usually there).
She said "No, that's how it looks." My wife and I looked at each other bemused and pointed out bananas in the french toast. I confirmed, after having had a taste, that it's DEFINITELY banana bread and NOT carrotcake. Our server continued to assert, more forcefully, "that's how it comes" as though we were mistaken. My wife and I shared a state of disbelief. Was the server being serious? To double-down on the error when it was so clearly a small mistake. She's not new.... what would she possibly gain by opting to respectfully disagree as to the type of bread used? Thinking the best of the server, my wife said "Look, I bake A LOT. This is banana bread, not carrot cake" to which the server CONTINUED to assert that it was carrot cake french toast because "it looks like that."
The plate returned to the service window with the server. I had a great view of the conversation between the head-shaven man who seemed to be in charge, our server, and another staff member. He seemed less than thrilled.
About 10 minutes later the carrot cake french toast arrived, delivered by a different server. She was very kind and almost apologetic. Our former server came by to collect dishes and offered parting remarks including "sometimes they put the banana bread with the carrot cake" and the lamest parting "....sorry." When it was clear we weren't over it, she returned with a 40% discount on the dish and milled about as I was signing. I'm a good tipper, much to my wife's chagrin, partly because I worked both sides of the house in college. I can't imagine telling a guest, after they've tasted the food, that it is something other than what it is. Needless to say, I didn't tip well.
Not sure about coming back. It's pretty clear what happened. I value the way things are done as much as what's done and I have a feeling that ownership at The Kitchen on Penn probably does too which is why I think it's important to record what should have been a small bump in an otherwise...
Read moreOur server was great, we had Melissa A and we didn't have a single issue with her, however, the rest of the experience was awful! As soon as we walked in the hostess was really grumpy and rude to everyone! She ignored us when we walked in and left to go somewhere and then when she came back the phone was ringing and instead of taking care of us first, she answered the phone and shoved her finger in our face telling us to wait! There was a wait when we got there and I went to the restroom, which was really dirty all around and there was no toilet paper-only a spare roll which I had to change myself! When we finally did get sat, the environment was just awful! All of the servers were bumping into each other and yelling and arguing with each other and overall being extremely rude to each other to the point where it was stressful sitting there and hearing all of it! At one point, one of the servers yelled out "excuse you!" in a really snarky tone and while she did apologize because she was not talking to us, it was really stressful environment to be in and definitely not what I expected out of a breakfast outing! For drinks we ordered two caramel lattes, an iced london fog, and a kid's chocolate milk, which all took a while to come out, then when we got our orders in-which also took a while to come out, they just were not up to par. The crab egg benedict didn't have a lot of crab in it and they did not look how the pictures looked online at all! I expected to have big chunks of crab and that just isn't what I got. Our eggs were all really dry and burnt, our potatoes were flavorless. In the Kitchen sink, the toast was put on top of the other food so it was soggy and the fruit we got on top of our pancake-which we paid for, was all really soft and just overall was not too good at all! The two lattes were very bitter-they definitely needed more milk-I wish there was an option for flavored creamer but all there was was plain white milk! The london fog had something on top, probably vanilla but it kept getting up the straw and just very unappetizing! Overall I spent over $100 for this breakfast and it was the worst money I ever spent on food! I will definitely...
Read moreSadly this initially decent restaurant in Murrysville has slid steadily and from my experience today to me it’s off the cliff bad now. I won’t be coming back. My son was home for Thanksgiving and I first decided to go to First Watch. It was so busy the hostess advised us that it may take 30-40 minutes to be seated. We decided to pass and headed up 22 a bit and my son suggested Kitchen on Penn. A stark contrast and now we better understand why nobody was there. Actually 2 people were seated in a place with perhaps 30 tables. Two others got to their front door ahead of us and were seated, then we were as well. Now there were a total of three tables, 6 total customers. There were three people working in their open kitchen but the food came out quite slow, we drank our coffees and waited patiently. Both our meals were very significantly below expectations nor did they resemble the menus descriptions. The “The Garden” a vegetable omelette had overcooked flavorless spinach (missing both the promised garlic and the baby menu description ), chunks of portobello mushrooms (clearly not grilled, more like boiled), not a speck of the advertised “vine ripe tomatoes” and oops they also completely forgot the Feta cheese. It was the worst omelette ever. I would have sent it back except my sons Kitchen Tacos were hideous. The Chorizo under the scrambled eggs was C O L D. Not lukewarm just plain cold. The Corn Tortillas were like shoe leather. The dish was taken back by the nice waitress to heat up the chorizo and ten minutes later it came back with the chorizo warmed up but the tortilla wrappers were still terribly tough, somewhat dried out. More coffee was brought out but this pot was lukewarm. A one star is because of the waitress giving us a discount on the Weak...
