Clear Springs serves the best fried catfish and onion rings in East Texas! Update: My husband, one of our grandsons and I are eating at Clear Springs, in Nacogdoches, again today. My husband and grandson ordered lunch special combo plates: gumbo and fried catfish for hubby and fried shrimp and fried catfish for Grandson Zander. I ordered a charbroiled chicken breast with pinto beans, hush puppies and onion rings. The charbroiled chicken breast takes a long time to cook, but it is delicious! As always, the fried catfish and onion rings are some of the best we have ever eaten! 😋 The restrooms are clean and stocked. The large, free parking lot is clean and well-maintained. Recommend! Update: My husband, four of our grandchildren, and I ate at Clear Springs again, this evening. Stand-out dishes were fried pork rinds, grilled pork chop (takes 20 minutes but is worth the wait), fried catfish, pinto beans and hushpuppies. The only disappointing dish was the dry coleslaw which had very little flavor. (I exchanged it for pinto beans.) Our waitress was friendly and efficient. The entire restaurant and parking lot was clean and well-lit. Our grandchildren missed the pretty fish, from the dining room aquarium, so much that they stared at the tank trying to spot a fish.

We are in town to visit Stephen F Austin University, so we decided to try this restaurant. We ordered the World Famous onion rings and cheese sticks to start. The onion rings were nicely batteres and tasty. The mozzarella sticks were also tasty and had a good cheese stretch. I ordered a house salad to start and it was okay. It comes with lettuce, tomato, bacon, egg, and onion. I asked for the egg and red onions to be left off. I did put a few on the onion rings on the salad. My husband had seafood combo platter, he chose catfish and shrimp, that came with coleslaw, fries, hush puppies, and beans. He said it was okay and some of the shrimp seemed slightly underdone. My daughter had the spicy chicken sandwich and fries. She said the sandwich was tasty, but not spicy and her fries were crispy. I had the chicken fried pork ribeye with mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies. The seasonal veggies were zucchini, squash, and onions. My pork was breaded nicely and very tender. The gravy was good, the normal country white gravy and the mashed potatoes and veggies were also good. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. I asked several questions and she answered them all.

Our first time to visit and I truly had great expectations. How could you go wrong with a restaurant located in a historical building with overflowing ambience. No wait time at 5pm Saturday as restaurant was about half full. Our waitress was adorable and attentive but could only serve us a quickly as the food prep could get it out. -Best of the meal was an order of Fried Onion Rings with a wait of 20 minutes. -Fish tacos were served with oily limp corn tortillas. Rice was cold and grilled fish was so so. At least it was served with Cilantro! -The two Fried Fish Platters were better but still not 5-star. -Why is everything served with pinto beans? -Key Lime Pie was fair. -Apparently, as indicated by the noise, the bar was full so perhaps that was where service was being directed. -And lastly, the bathrooms were DISGUSTING! Looked and smelled like something you would see at a roadside gas station in the middle of no where! COME ON GUYS...you have an excellent venue and a captive audience of hungry people who want to support you. Get it together!

Overall, I loved the atmosphere and old-time feel of this place, but I think the food and service has some room for improvement. Most of the food was average in terms of spices used, cooking time, and overall flavor. My catfish was at the perfect crunch level, but my hush puppies and broccoli were a bit overdone. The chicken fried steak was overcooked as well. And both of our desserts (peach cobbler and banana pudding) were not the best. The peach cobbler was way too doughy and the banana pudding flavor was very artificial and contained overripe bananas. Our waitress was friendly, but there were multiple occasions where we asked for napkins or our waters where we had to remind her. Again, we’re all human, but after a while it was a bit tiresome. I’d be willing to give this place another try, but I think small adjustments need to be made to enhance the overall experience.

Changing my review: This time was a sad disappointment. Oysters were mediocre, at best, far fewer than what was on my plate last visit, two different shades of fry looked like half of order was reheated, just not good. Hushpuppies not up to par, rest of food as good as usual. Server was inattentive, 20 minutes to take our drink order, brings salad WITH the main course. So disappointed. I hope they are not following Auntie Pasta's downward turn. (September) **Original review from June: *****Consistantly excellent. Great oysters, for the middle of June. Top notch service, never a disappointment. Definitely try the crab cake appetizer, it's special. Primo desserts, a terrific bar with local Fredonia Brewing Co. beer, and interesting mixed drinks, such as "Dangerous Redhead."**

We ate lunch here and the catfish was delicious! My wife had the Gumbo and she said it was good as well.
