We were attending a show down the street and my boyfriend, being a Mexican food enthusiast, wanted to try this place and after looking at the menu online, I agreed that it sounded good!
The restaurant itself is very nice - it has a large dining room with very nice decor and the place is CLEAN. I’ve seriously never seen a restaurant with bathrooms this clean! The restaurant itself seems to be very meticulously maintained. Our server was very nice and accommodating. We were given chips and salsa and something completely new to me- white sauce. My boyfriend was excited about this because it’s apparently something that’s common in Mexican restaurants in his home state of WV. It was new and strange to me so I didn't love it but didn’t hate it either. I can see it being really good on coconut shrimp or something. Now for the food: he got the carne asada tacos and I got the pollo rellano dish which on the menu explicitly states comes with two sides but when I ordered I was told it came with only one side because it came with black beans. I got the rice. The tacos were not horrible according to my boyfriend but he said that there was a weird seasoning on the meat that he didn’t care for, but he liked the rice and refried beans. My dish was… odd. It tasted and smelled like it was loaded with Parmesan even though it was supposed to be cotija cheese and the sauce also tasted more Italian than Mexican. The flavor was weird. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever eaten but I definitely wouldn’t get it again. The rice was ok - no potatoes or peas and not as tasty as other Mexican restaurants I’ve been to. The black beans were awful- no salt or flavor to them at all. It’s like they just dumped them out of a can, boiled them for a while and said “here you go!” I didn’t eat more than 1 bite. We ended up getting fried ice cream and that was very good.
All in all, it could have been a lot worse. I don’t know that I’d go out of my way to come here again, but I wouldn’t be against giving it another shot either. I think I’d stick with the basics next time though. While I wouldn’t say “you’ve GOT to try this place!” I’d still say it’s worth a try - I may just have weird taste buds and someone else may think it’s absolutely delicious! I hate not giving a glowing review because the employees are so nice and the restaurant itself...
Read moreWell, maybe I deserved it for trying this place for the first time in Cinqo de Mayo? Let's start with the good: the food that we did get was delicious. Fresh made guac was on point. You can customize with the add ins you want. Chicken fajitas were totally delicious. Kids menu includes mexican and american stuff. The kids chicken and fries was delicious and HUGE portion, so if you have a small kid who doesn't eat much, you've got lunch for tomorrow all set.
Ok, the bad. This place is a DISASTER when it comes to service. I would give them a mulligan since it was Cinqo...but they had about 50 people working in the front of the house, and it wasn't even that busy! We waited for about 40 minutes for a table that was supposed to take 20. When I finally asked if we could have a seat they were like "we called you three times." yeah....no you didn't. And instead of apologizing, the host wanted to fight about it. So, that's not cool. We did get seated though. And when we got seated i did not understand why there was a wait, as the entire back of the place was empty.
Then we had a waitress who I think was from another planet. At least, that's where she left her brain. She took meticulous notes on our order, then failed put one of the three dishes we ordered in (and the second dish was not what we ordered, but we ate it anyways, because hungry). When it was clear that she had messed up, she didn't make amends. And even had the nerve to walk by our table about 10 minutes later and go, "what were you guys waiting on?" Yeah, so we cancelled the last meal and got out of there.
Also, they ran out of Tecate on Cinqo. I mean, come on. Rookie move.
The service was a shame, because the place was lovely, well appointed, and the food was absolutely delish. I would go back. But I would go back at a quieter time of day. Because they can't handle being a...
Read moreAvoid. Went in on Sunday at 9PM. They are open till 1AM. The host acted surprised that we wanted to eat and this should've tipped us off. We ordered food, I got a quesadilla and my friend got tacos. When the food came out, the quesadilla was soggy and was not even cut up so it looked like a giant taco. the underside was so soggy that when I tried to pick it up the whole thing just fell apart all over the place. The tacos were no better. it was burnt meat on a tortilla shell. That's it. they provided chopped onions as a topping. Nothing more. Meat, onions and shell. I suspect this was due to lazy staff as I asked the waitress if the food normally is like this and she said no. Since it was not busy (we were the only people in the dining area) I can only assume the cook and wait staff did not care the food looked and tasted horrible. We could not even eat it and the host and waitress kept laughing as they stole glances our way.
Bottom line, the employees do not care that they serve disgusting looking and tasting food. It is a shame that our experience was so horrible. Lazy staff that did not want to work and make something people can eat. I assume that going in at 9PM, when your open till 1AM you will be ready to at least serve something edible.
We will...
