I was hyped for this place for a while but really the chicken was not any better than fried chicken I get from other chicken places (Flavor wise). Fried chicken was crispy and clearly cooked fresh to order, moist and not dry, but was lacking in flavor from any marinade or spices on it. Maybe that’s the style of Thai chicken but I’ve had better fried chicken from other Thai restaurants where it wasn’t their specialty. This chicken heavily relied on the vinegar sauces and herbs/veggies that come with it. The vinegar sauces weren’t that amazing either, also lacking in true flavor in my opinion. The good thing is the orders comes with sticky rice, crispy fried onions/chilis, herbs like basil and mint, some tomatoes, cabbage, and 2 vinegary sauces, but the chicken itself doesn’t taste seasoned or with a hint of marinade. Thai iced tea also wasn’t sweetened much; may have just been a one time mishap. The mango sticky rice was a good treat though. I’d get that again. If you’re looking for some really good flavorful chicken, the good thing is Nashville has a lot of options in that department. I wouldn’t send somebody here with my recommendations for the chicken unless I knew they wanted verrrryy simple, subtle flavors. Some people are used to that, I am not one of those people. There’s a lot in...

It is It can be a tall order to stand out as a chicken joint in what place in where many people consider to be a major fried chicken city - (Nashville,) and in my opinion, SS Gai not only stands out But stands above.
The Mainstays on their menu are the Gai yang and Gai tod, charcoal grillt and fried chicken, respectively - and which ever the one of those you pick, you get sticky rice and veggies, and a couple of homemade sauces, which are both bright and flavorful, and have that classic Thai spicy, sweet, funky punch - you eat with your hands, and there is no wrong way to do it - I would scoop up come chicken and veggies with a clump of sticky rice, and dunk it in the tamarind fish sauce, or soemtimes make a little lettuce cup too - I had a lot of fun to try and find the way you like the best.
The chicken itself is juicy and delicious, we tried both the grilled and fried and left unable to pick a faborite -
Also, I recently tried their Khao Soi, and it was quite good as well, if you're in the mood for a funky, Herby chicken noodle soup to warm your soul
I think Nashville is lucky...
Read moreSS Gai is located inside the a small food hall known as the wash. When you arrive you have several options to choose from including a small cocktail bar.
I’ve been told multiple times that SS Gai was the best fried chicken that they have ever had. Not in Nashville (which has great fried chicken) but with a period.
It’s a limited menu but well done menu at SS Gai. Fried and grilled chicken are both served with veggies and sticky rice.
I have to agree that the chicken is phenomenal, and I really enjoyed making little lettuce wrap tacos and dipping them in the sauces that came with it.
For $14 for the 2 piece or $20 for the 4 piece I felt the food was a decently attractive value and I enjoyed the little patio while I ate. For $3 more you can make it spicy (but it’s really spicy) which I will probably skip next visit.
After ordering at the window they will bring your food to your table. Service was quick, the girl at the counter was friendly.
I would place the wash on a very short list of must try restaurants in Nashville. If fried chicken isn’t what you want there are other...
