I just moved from Chicago. Anyone who lives there knows ramen is a winter staple. The first thing my husband and I said upon arriving to Nashville was, “We need a good ramen place, a good tapas place, a good brunch place, and a good place for shows.” Nashville is a vastly growing area for “foodies”, so I assumed going to top ranked ramen would fulfill our ramen dreams.... Nah. I took one bite and knew things were nowhere similar to the amazing ramen I’ve eaten every week for the past ten years. First, the noodles were completely different. They didn’t taste like egg noodles. Maybe they use something different, but I definitely prefer egg noodles in my ramen. Second, the pork belly was definitely not slow cooked. I’m used to pork that falls into pieces when you touch your chopstick to it, and this pork was tough. Third, I like spice. I usually order spicy miso but would be fine with regular tonkotsu as long as I have some chili paste (sambal oelek) to throw on top. Two Ten Jack only has chili oil. I was able to tell a bit of a difference. It wasn’t as spicy, and it didn’t mix well. I had to keep stirring throughout my entire meal. For those of you who frequent ramen joints and are expecting this to be one, this is definitely not one. There are no ramen condiments on the table to pour into your bowl. That’s not a deal-breaker for me but can definitely be a disappointment for those expecting full-service ramen.
Okay, regarding everything non-ramen... I can’t speak for the food yet because I didn’t try anything else, but they have incredible selections of appetizers and skewers. There’s also a full bar. Service-wise, the place kind of sucks. Upon entering, my husband and I walked to the hostess stand where the guy just stared at us. I said, “two please,” and he mumbled something I couldn’t understand. I said, “excuse me?”. He rolled his eyes and said “community seating or bar?”. I looked at my husband and said “do you have a preference?” and my husband said “a preference in what?”. He STILL didn’t understand the mumbling hostess. So I told my husband our options and he said, “I guess bar is okay.” So I looked to the mumbling hostess and he said, “Okay, then go ahead.” We had no idea where to go. We had never been there before, so his actions seemed super rude. We grabbed seats at the bar and proceeded to watch the servers pour drinks for about 10 minutes until one girl brought us a menu. From there, service was decent until I finished my first drink and waited about 20 minutes before either server even asked if we were okay or needed anything. I don’t know if my advice is to not sit at the bar or if the service is always sub-par, but my husband and I definitely had a...
Read moreIt would behoove of Google to allow for half star ratings. I would love to give 3.5 stars to this restaurant. That is my actual rating but it wasn't quite good enough to give 4.
I visited this restaurant 3 years ago. While I wasn't very impressed, I decided to give it another go today because my favorite ramen place, Mori Mori in Mount Juliet, was closed for New Year's day.
The ramen at Two Ten Jack is just not up to snuff. It is merely okay. The service was fine. The sushi was tough. The chicken meatballs in the tori paitan shoyu didn't taste like meat. I don't quite know what was off but it just didn't taste right. Three years ago, I had the tonkotsu and didn't even finish it because I was so disappointed. I was too afraid to try it again this time, as I was genuinely trying to not to judge the restaurant to harshly.
I really despise the community seating arrangements at this restaurant. I feel the need to shout at whomever I'm with because you are seated much closer in proximity to complete strangers than you are to your accompanying guest.
The only reason I give Two Ten Jack 3 stars and not 1 or 2 is because of the incredible miso butter and takoyaki (octopus hush puppies as I understand it). I was thoroughly impressed, as was my friend, so much so that we ordered sushi with our ramen and waited excitedly for the rest of our meal to come. Neither the sushi nor the ramen could compare to the complexity and perfection of the takoyaki.
Overall, I would not necessarily go back. Everything was okay, but for the hype and the fact that you can never seem to get a seat at the bar (my preferred seating area), it just wasn't worth my time. The service leaves something to be desired. The host and hostess didn't bother to acknowledge my friend's and my presence until I rather loudly interjected into what seemed to be a private conversation between two people who didn't appear to comprehend that they were on the clock and should be taking on the responsibility of greeting guests at the door.
I'd much rather continue to drive all the way to Mt. Juliet, though I live in Nashville, for...
Read moreMy husband and I went here tonight for our anniversary. We had gone a few years ago and loved it, so we decided to go again this year. It was a flop to say the least. First off, the online menu (only option for a menu ) is terrible if you don't know Japanese food well. There are no descriptions that tell you what to expect. Between googling and asking the server I was able to get a slight idea about a few things and we finally ordered. The apps we ordered were good but quite lacking for the price. I ordered pork Ramen and he ordered short ribs. When my Ramen came out it had a very distinct odor that I can only describe as foul. Once I mixed it up it got better but not what I would consider good. Only my order came out though. 5-7 minutes later our server came back to see how everything was and my husband reminded her he had yet to get any food. She said the kitchen was running behind and it'd be a few minutes longer. A good 10 minutes passed before she came back to our table to tell us that the kitchen has lost his order and then told us they'd run out of short ribs. At this point my husband canceled his order altogether as we had already been there for quite some time and had plans for after dinner. Our server brought out a complimentary dessert, some Gallatin ice cream bites, but while a nice gesture, definitely doesn't take the place of a good meal. We got the bill, paid and left. I only ate 1/2 of my Ramen because the egg and broth was really the only part worth eating and at that point the experience had been ruined. Even the noodles weren't like normal Ramen noodles. They were exactly like your run of the mill angel hair pasta noodles. I was so excited to go back tonight and to be so thoroughly disappointed kind of killed the overall mood of the night. I'm not sure that we will go back after this. It was like an entire different restaurant compared to last time. $35+ for 2 small appetizers and a bowl of Ramen was not worth the drive...
