I've lived in Singapore for 22-years, I'm well traveled (with Expatriate assignments across Asia, including Tokyo) and here's my take on the menus and the authenticity of the fare at Market on 8th: sampling the dishes at Market on 8th was like a culinary expedition across Asia, but better! I was astounded to find regional favourites, from street food favourites (Asia is well known for its amazing Hawker Stalls; in fact, only in Asia will you find a Michelin star was awarded to a hawker! The equivalent of the Mexican Taco stand, Asians take their street food seriously) to the dishes that one can only find at Japanese Izakayas and hip Asian restaurants (like the ones featured in the movie Crazy Rich Asians). Example, Chicken Katsu Sando (a lightly breaded chicken breast Japanese-style served in a Vietnamese-style Bánh mì sandwhich! The Katsu and Bánh mì are cult favourites in their country and I was blown away by how deliciousness of this fusion sandwich), and don't get me started on the Thai-Style Mango Ice Cream and sticky rice which is aptly named "Oh Em Gee!" Every dish was so refreshingly flavourful, but here's the best part: the stall owners all have a cultural heritage link to the food they are making and they've added a fusion of flavours that has not only redefined and reimagined the dishes, but elevated well-known dishes and they do so with a humble brilliance that captures the imagination (they warmly welcome everyone here; there's no trendy hipster pretentious snobbery) and it serves to create an unforgettable sensorial experience (the market is beautifully designed; you feel 100% cooler the minute you step into the place!). Such was my experience that I returned 3-times during my trip to San Diego and I didn't...
Read moreMe and my friends visited this place and we all got food from different restaurants/stands. The Campechano fries from La Central were pretty good and the service there was nice! My boyfriend ordered the burger from Cafe Indonesia and he said he didn’t like it but my friend ordered another plate from there and he liked it, but I cannot recall what it was called. My other friend ordered a teriyaki bowl from Donburi and she said she didn’t like it because of how much teriyaki sauce the plate had. I also ordered a signature milk tea from MNGO and it tasted very watered down and the employee who took my order was very shy and not the most polite.
The experience that took the cake for me at this Market was at Novo. The bartender was apparently not feeling it that day and had a very reluctant and moody attitude with us when serving us. I already contacted Novo about it and they said they would address the situation.
We wanted to try out this place because of its similarity to Liberty Station Public Market or the one in Little Italy. The atmosphere is very nice, they have plenty of tables and they also have some comfy looking couches. However, the four of us agreed this one was not it, food and customer...
Read moreOver priced and tasteless food. We ordered Mexican food. i had the carne asada burrito, my wife, ordered la Central Rockefeller fries, The burrito was around 12, the French fries around 14. For 12 dollars, I was expecting a good size, hardy burrito but instead, the dish was almost the size of a Taco Bell burrito (maybe little large). You can imagine my disappoinment. but you know what? maybe the flavor will make it up for the small burrito.... well, disappointed again!. a rather plain, no condiments carne asada burrito with the worse hot salsa i ever tried.... sad! now, on the other hand., the Rockefeller french fries dish was of good size, but also a little plain when it comes to flavor. the chipotle hot sauce was not bad. As for the venue.. not a big size, clean, well distributed, remodeled building. they have outside seating with fire pits and large tables. Please, notice this review is for the food rather than the venue or other small eating places inside... maybe they have better tasting food. regardless of that, i would not eat here again... too expensive of a price for...
