We tried Hola Mexican Cocina & Cantina for a little birthday brunch celebration with the family and we all left happy and very full! The meal started out with fresh made Tortilla Chips and Chicarróns seasoned with Tajin. They were accompanied by a Salsa Roja Fresca and a Salsa Verde Asada, both were worthy of asking for seconds.
Since we brought the family with us we were able to try a good number of dishes. A couple different style Fajitas, a Chicken & Shrimp version and a Carne Asada. Both came with steaming hot Tortillas, Guacamole, Tres Queso, Fresh Crema, and a Pico de Gallo. Neither of these plates lasted very long!
My wife decided on the Enchiladas and I got a Fried Burrito, they were accompanied with Cilantro Rice, Black Beans and a Chipotle Fideo con Crema, which is a pasta side dish. Everything came out steaming hot and packed with flavor. The fresh ingredients really shined and I think we went through two baskets of chips before our food arrived.
We also tried the Chicken Albondigas Soup, and let me tell you, it was so good we didn't even get a photo of it! One giant chicken meat ball in a spicy soup made from Chayote, Carrots, Potato, Onion, Celery and Cilantro. There was even rice in it, this was an incredible soup and my only regret is not getting a photo. Dessert... No meal is complete without dessert!
In our case we split the Churros & Dulce de Leche, and they were fantastic! Everybody loves a good Churro anyway but when you pair it with the super sweet and gooey, Dulce de Leche, you end up with a magical end to a stellar meal. This little basket of fried goodness didn't even sit on the table long enough to start getting cold.
Basically you won't be able to eat them fast enough, they really are that good! You didn't think we would go to brunch and not get a drink did you?
Since we drove separately, only the birthday boy got a cocktail, but let me tell you it was delicious. The "El Diablo" is a Spicy Pineapple Mezcal-Rita. Made with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Ancho Reyes, Roasted Pineapple, Fresh Sour Mix, Habanero Fire Water and a Habanero Tajin Salted rim. An explosion of flavor in a glass and the taste of the little roasted chunks of pineapple dance on your tongue like kid with new shoes. 💃🏻🕺🏻
Each drink comes with a cool little collectible card that can be used to play a fun little drinking game kind of like bingo. Read moreIve been meaning to visit this place for a while now and yesterday was finally the day. I wanted Mexican food and it just made sense to give it a try. So i get seated and I'm ready to order my drinks, they don't make dirty martinis because they don't have martini glass or olives, they also Don't make jalapeño margaritas ( this is a Mexican restaurant that does Not makes jalapeño margaritas, unbelievable ), my server Veronica said she could have the bartender add some havanero pepper in my Margarita to make it spicy. But when she bought the drink it was pure simple syrup and not a drop of spice, so I didn't drink it, I return the drink. Then I ordered the chicken fajitas, I was never asked what kind of tortillas so I had to ask if I could get corn tortillas. They also Don't mix tacos. So you can only have 1 choice of protein for the tacos ( all Mexican restaurant let you mix, not this one ) The food didn't taste bad but it lacked big time in flavor. So I asked Veronica if they had flan and she said yes. I asked her if the flan had cinnamon and she told me that she could ask the kitchen to not sprinkle cinnamon on my flan so I said ok. My first bite of the flan I taste cinnamon in the flan. So I didn't eat it. I gave my server the card to pay without even looking at the bill and after I paid that she brought me the CC receipt and my itemized and I noticed that she didn't void the drink, so I asked her about it and she told me that her managers normally don't void the drinks. I told her that I was not gonna pay for a drink that I didn't drink, I had 2 sips and that was it. She came back and the drink was voided. As I walked out. I saw the hostes by the entrance and I asked to speak to a manager. She said she was the assistant manager. So I told her about my experience, I explained to her that they should be careful about their servers not knowing what's in the food because what if I was allergic to cinnamon, all she said was ok. She wasn't rude, but she showed No sympathy or said sorry at any point. So I really hope this review can help make a difference for better. That place is absolutely beautiful, the floors, the paperwall, the decorations, the loteria drink promo is genius, but they definitely need...
Read moreOur family decided to try Hola Mexican Cocina on a whim on a Monday night as a small celebration for a work achievement. I made a reservation before driving over. It was fairly busy for a Monday as it is a smaller place, but we were served quickly by our very efficient and friendly server. The atmosphere is really fun - exactly what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant, but with much more authenticity than many other establishments. My young son decided on a cheese quesadilla with rice. My husband and I ordered enchiladas and Mahi Mahi tacos. The complimentary chips were delicious, but both salsas were very spicy. My son ended up just eating chips for dinner because he did not like the cheese used in the quesadilla (adults though the quesadilla was the best thing that came to the table) nor the taste of the rice and fideo. I was proud that he tried it, though. When our meal came, I began to understand why he didn't like some things. You can barely taste any other flavor other than SPICE. Everything is over spiced - the black beans, the cilantro rice, the fideo - it's all overspiced for our palettes. Food in Mexico didn't taste this spicy. I could barely distinguish between the slaw and the Mahi Mahi, the rice and the fideo. It all tasted the same, just with different textures. If you're super into spicy, this is the right place for you. I typically like more spice than my guys, but not this time. We left a good portion of our meals uneaten. I ended up digging out the fish and ate it on it's own. My son made the mistake of trying the "mild" salsa and almost cried about the spice. We had to go around the corner after dinner to get soft serve Dole Whip to calm down our palettes.
Pros: great atmosphere, cozy, authentic; good service; easy to make a reservation. Cons: food is too spicy (to us); food was overpriced based on our overall enjoyment of it.
Overall, I recommend you try it for yourself. It just isn't to our taste or palettes. I'd probably go back for a Happy Hour girls night or something over a chain because I prefer to support...
