This is my absolute favorite restaurant in New Braunfels!
There are so many reasons why I love this restaurant, and frankly I cannot believe I have never done a google review on Huisache!! But today I will remedy that!
As I was saying, there are so many reasons why this is my favorite NBTX restaurant! Let me start at the top!
Vibe, ambiance, charm. It is a neighborhood restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere. It is tucked off of busy San Antonio street just far enough… and that little secluded setback removes any stress of the daily hustle and bustle of our busy downtown. The inside is welcoming and I love the little racks that hold wraps you can borrow if you feel a little chilly. It is a comforting homey thing that just feels good to me.
Staff. Every step of your visit will be met with welcoming and professional staff. From the hosts to the table, everyone is friendly, accommodating and patient. We have never had anything but stellar service here.
Wine. The wine list. So many great wines at various price points, but we love to treat ourselves to some of their more expensive options while there. It always feels like a celebration. We have even come here after dinner or events elsewhere, just for wine. Good wine in a great atmosphere is always a great way to end an evening!
Soup. The Huisache kitchen knows how to make a great pot of soup. Have the soup. Any soup before your meal or even as a meal with one of their delicious salads! Always comforting and delectable!
Fried Brie. I crave this appetizer. Crave it! Served with raspberry chipotle sauce, greens, bread, Granny Smith apples and sweetened pecans, it is so delicious!
Entrees. All of them. The food is prepared at a personal level. This is not a cookie cutter kitchen. Each dish is prepared with attention to detail and flavor in mind. My favorites are the Hot and Crunchy Trout as well as the Pecan Dusted Pork Tenderloin Medallions. They also have the freshest vegetables and delicious pastas. There are also mix and match options if you can’t decide or want to mix it up.
Lunch. The first time we visited was for a late lunch. We had a delicious California Sandwich, which we shared after some fried Brie and a delicious dry Riesling.
I hope I haven’t forgotten anything, but trust me, just go. It is a treat if you love good food and wine! You will not regret it! Then it will be your...
Read moreThis was my second time to Huisache Grill and my wife's fourth. Stopped here on Mother's Day as we traveled back to San Antonio from out of town. Fortunately, our wait was minimal, but even if it had been longer the venue has options for relaxing waiting outside and inside.
Our server was adequate, but no more. Very little interaction with us beyond the minimum required. Not unfriendly, but not friendly or engaging.
The food was good, but not as good as either of us had experienced before. Both of us got the Parmesan Breaded Chicken Breast, which came with penne pasta in a white wine cream sauce (very good) and broccoli (basic, but not bad). The chicken itself was disappointing. The outside was over-cooked, the meat fairly tough, and the stuffing of a mix of cheeses, mushrooms (didn't see any), artichoke hearts (good), and spinach was not good to me. I believe it was whatever soft cheese they use, most likely a soft cheese with a very pungent flavor. Many may like it, but I did not.
The rolls and side salad were both very good.
Lastly, the tea. No restaurant in Texas--especially one as nice as Huisache Grill with its excellent reputation--should have cloudy, weak tea. Iced tea is one of the ways we generally can tell right up front if a place is going to be good or not, and in general I'd say that is about 90% accurate for the rest of the meal, in our experience. I have no idea why the water was not filtered and clear, but the tea was just weak and poor-tasting. We should have returned it, but aren't "those kind" of people. It was disappointing.
Overall, it is still a great location, cool-vibe venue with much on the menu to like. This visit was just disappointing. Hopefully the next time we try it...
Read more5/10 experience The experience i had at the Huisache Grill was a pleasant one. The food was okay, the pricing was good, and the atmosphere was nice.
my partner and i started off in high spirits with the fried brie. it was accompanied with candied pecans, a chipotle raspberry sauce, and some greens. The appetizer itself was phenomenal. Setting the bar high for the rest of the meal.
I had ordered the crunchy trout with a side of the crawfish and shrimp soup. The trout itself was a slight disappointment. The crisp it was supposed to have was instead replaced by a rubbery, chewy mouthfeel that comes from leaving food under a heat lamp(or out) for too long. The dish came with a side of sautéed broccoli and baby potatoes. The broccoli was very good at the first bite, but extremely offputting on the second. Each broccoli head seemed inconsistently cooked, with some being deliciously crunchy, while others were soft enough to mash with my tongue. The potatoes were good, although nothing special just baked baby potatoes.
I also was slightly disappointed in the soup; the shrimp and crawfish soup(a special of the day). While it was delicious, rich and flavorful with a wonderful mouthfeel, i found multiple pieces of crawfish shell in the dish.
Disappointed by the dishes, we chose not to pursue a desert.
The service was subpar. The server made my partner and I feel as if we were just a task list to complete, and only checked on us three times; once to take our order, another to drop our food off, and once more to drop the check.
Overall it was a pleasant evening. I did have higher expectations for this restaurant and am slightly disappointed over...
