This is a tough review for me. I’ve been to Destination Dogs many times before pre covid. This was my first time in recent years and we went during restaurant week. Let me focus on the positives. The ambience is wonderful and decor is super fun. The inside is comfortable and it’s always nice being greeted by random games when you go to the bathroom. The food was solid. I’ve had better here but today was still good. First was the conquistador dog which was pretty tasty. It’s nice having potatoes on top. The sauce was a little heavy but overall it worked. Next was the Kansas City dog. The pulled pork and hotdog worked really well together. The beef nachos were delicious and super tasty. A side of fries rounded out the meal nicely. For dessert we had the chocolate mosaic cake which I’d give a B. Now the not so good. Service was pretty bad. It’s hard because I know many places are understaffed - so some of that might not be the fault of the wait staff. However regardless of reason, it results in a bad experience for the customer. First was ordering two waters and a coke with the nachos. We got everything but the coke since the waiter forgot. He relatively quickly addressed that. The hotdogs came out at a good time. Once given our entrees, we didn’t see the waiter again until the food was eaten and all the drinks were done. It would’ve been nice to re order drinks while eating. Upon taking our plates to bring us the dessert, we asked for two more waters. We received the dessert. But no water, and so we reminded the waiter. The waiter passed us two more times over the next 10-15 minutes with no water. Eventually I got up, walked a few feet to the bar and asked for after myself. I don’t know if this was relevant, but the table by us was engaged with two different workers (not at the same time) for almost their entire meal time. I don’t know if this resulted in less workers creating more work for others. Just trying to rationalize what happened. If I had never eaten here before I would probably not return. That being said. The food is good. Hopefully this was a one off. And I’ll probably be back in...
Read moreWords can not express the love that I have for Destination Dogs. The food is an obvious draw, as the options available on the menu are memorable experiences that I can bloviate about for hours about. The drinks are just as much as an experience as well.
Time for a back story. Owners Frank and Jimmy are trained mixologists that have come up with amazing drinks that the staff executes with sheer perfection. Whether it's a Moscow Mule with Jamaican Ginger Beer, or my favoite the Old Fashioned, I am immediately put into a perfect mood to relax with a mature cocktail while watching a sports event or an 80s/90s cinematic classic on the numerous flat screens that cover the lower level of the establishment.
Now for the food. You're talking about the best hot dogs, sausages, and bread in the state of NJ. Everything is fresh, tastes amazing, and has a memorable experience in and of itself. My favorite dogs are the Nicky Newarker (because I'm from Newark, NJ; I wish that they would take the plunge and make pizza bread to make the italian hot dog complete) and the Coney (beef dog with chili, spicy mustard and diced raw onions). The Achilles Meal with Lamb sausage, taziki sauce, and red onions is an amazing item as well. Next, they have great chicken sandwiches - both grilled and fried, which are amazing. Add to it an amazing assortment of salads (I LOVE the salads) and appetizers (deviled eggs, wings, pretzels, and nachos) make the dining experience diverse enough to have an amazing time, whether you're doing a sit down dinner, or just enjoying a few cocktail and some appetizers. Destination Dogs has it all.
