The Zimmerli Art Museum is truly an incredible place, with the kind of art, artifacts, and even war memorabilia like journals and other writings, that will pull you in and engage you to the point where all you're really thinking about is walking around and taking it all in. It is a place to get absorbed, while you are learning a lot about many different artists and sculptors, and writers that you probably have never heard of. I wish I could remember more about it, but I went there 4 years ago, and I don't live on the East coast or anywhere near New Jersey, so I may never be back. But if I had to pick a museum I would like to revisit, it would be the Zimmerli Art Museum. Please avail yourself of it! Note that it is also on the campus of Rutgers University, which is lovely, with its own historical buildings and beautiful, lush lawns and gardens, so make sure that you walk around the campus as well as visiting the library while you are at the site. Obviously since you are back East, you would want to go in May or June, or early September. It's nice if you could go after college is out for the year, or before it starts up again in the fall. You will have a wonderful,...
Read moreThis is one of Middlesex County's best-kept secrets. Totally free (donations accepted--and given the experience well-earned). Kid-friendly, even for 6, 7, 8 yr olds (my kids' ages when I first took them, youngest might even have been 5). Never crowded. Walking distance to Easton Ave (Thomas Sweet Ice Cream and many great restaurants--try Tacoria). And again, because it is free it is a great quick afternoon excursion with the kids. But even on those short trips it is clear that this museum has an amazing, well-curated collection, and I intend to go back without them to really take it all in. The special exhibits rotate (the current one is NOT kid friendly, but the staff warned me in advance so we stuck to the other areas that day, and there was still plenty to do.) They mix it up enough that there is enough variety and enough changes that we go back every four to six months.
Note the staff is polite and friendly enough, but they definitely take their jobs seriously so don't get put off if they (gently) reprimand the kids (or you) for even an initial,...
Read moreI recently visited the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, as I am a current student. I was thoroughly impressed by both the collection and the experience. The museum offers an incredible outline of art, from Russian and Soviet Nonconformist and European art. The atmosphere was welcoming, and peaceful. The admission is free which is another plus. The location and accessibility was easy too with parking and finding the museum. The staff was super friendly and well educated on each exhibit. There were little to no people which I loved. Also, the exhibits are well-curated and I realized that as I was walking around that there is always something new to discover. Overall, I had a great time. It was a great experience for me. I highly recommend the Zimmerli Art Museum to anyone in the area, whether you’re an art enthusiast or like me and...
