Second time trying this place out- First time I didn't enjoy the food, but they were new to town so I figured I'd give them another try.
Charming atmosphere.. great decor. I've met the owner previously who is very kind and her space shows her energy, and I have heard great things from a friend. But the girl at the register today had no charisma and seemed busy with chores and dry when taking my order, unlike Momma. I was the only person in line.. No big deal, I just like a smile and a greeting never hurts when you're offering someone a meal in return for payment.
I had a craving for authentic chorizo tacos (why I came, I was local) and to my disappointment the meat had very little flavor and no sear to it. Great price, just not the traditional meat and spice I was expecting.
The salsitas were yummy and fresh. The chicken empanada had great dough but the meat wasn't the best.. not terrible just a little bland, missing salt.
I said goodbye when leaving and the two ladies behind the counter didn't turn their heads- if they had I would've said something direct then instead of leaving a review.
Not big on giving low online reviews but I think the food might be catering to the area and general customer here. As a Mexican who has lived in Mexico, this didn't hit the spot. I am picky and this just wasn't for me.
I would recommend trying it to your average eater, the food is fresh and the price range is decent for certain items. It's a pleasure to see a woman from Mexico owning a business in New Milford. I'd come again if someone wanted company, but if you want some more familiar Mexican- try El Ranchero in Danbury.
While I'm here, it is extremely disappointing to see single-use products that go straight to the garbage being used for dine-in items. These plastic and paper items could easily be replaced with plates and ramekins- The environment could benefit from a change.. Starting small makes the biggest difference.
All the best and may this only provide insight- No...
Read moreDon't take my 2 star rating as a bad thing... First, I arrived around 45 minutes after they opened, on a Friday. There was only 1 young lady behind the register. The older momma's were in the back, working like crazy. I ordered Carne Asada tacos. I am a simple street taco fiend. I've eaten street tacos from coast to coast, below the the border and oversees. They were busy. Phone rang off the hook, people walking in, 1 woman handling it all. She did amazing, but they had 15 ordered stacked on top of each other within 5 minutes. I received my tacos in a good time, and walked them out to my car. 3 Carne tacos. Simple, with red sauce. I poured the red all over the tacos. After my first bites, I could tell the tortillas were fresh, made by hand. But the Carne, was dry, no flavor, no seasoning, nothing. Fresh cilantro, good onion, but the red sauce, had nothing. I'm a heat guy. My home hot sauces consist of ghost, reaper, pepper x and scorpion. But this had less flavor and heat than Tabasco. I literally, didn't taste it. For tacos, I give a 2/10. The 2 is for the hand made tortillas. Regardless, the Carne should have been marinading in glory. Instead, it's almost like they took plain flank out of a freezer and threw it on the grill. I will go back, because there is a reason they are so busy and they have repeat customers, but not for tacos. Tino's Cafe in Naugatuck has the best street tacos locally. I'll drive the 35 min for those, versus the 12 minutes for tacos from Momma's. But I will give them another try. Just...
Read moreI want to put in a good word – a very good word – about Momma’s Tacos in New Milford. Having grown up in Texas and spent a fair amount of time there since, I know a good taco when I see and taste it. And these are terrific, and very authentic, too.
There’s a surprisingly big menu. I first ordered three lengua tacos – that’s beef tongue, a traditional southwest and Mexican protein. They came simply prepared, with just cilantro, onions and really fresh and vibrant salsa, both red and green. If you’ve never had lengua, you’re in for a treat. It’s flavorful and tender. They were so good I then went back for three tacos al pastor (seasoned pork cooked on a vertical spit – something I used to get all over central Mexico years ago). They were incredibly good, so much so that for a minute I thought I was back in Puebla, or maybe Austin. Really delicious. My wife joined me for three pollo tacos (chicken) and these, too, were delicious and not overcooked – perfect street food, just served indoors.
I spoke to the owner (Momma, I suppose), who clearly knows this food very well and loves it. She makes her own Mexican chorizo, which I can’t wait to try. She also told me that she’s going to start making soups in January 2022, including my favorite, pozole, which is the best thing in the world on a cold day. But I can’t wait until January (just a month away) – I have to go back right away and...
