Took the Ferry over to Algiers solely to come to the Barracuda taco stand (and sure to also say we crossed the Mississippi while in NOLA.
It was 32 degrees and 100% humidity (over 90 I guess for Americans) so needless to say it was HOT and the walk from the ferry to the stand was brutal because of it.
Knowing what I know now, I would have walked through straight fire to get more of these tacos, chips and queso. We've back in Australia for a week and my husband (he just got two beef) has brought up several times that he didn't realise how good they were at the time.
I ordered 3 tacos, Pork, Beef and a Chicken, rated from 1-3 in the written order. From the tortilla, to how the meat was spiced and cooked as well as the varied toppings that accompanied each taco, these were phenomenal and a must visit if you're in New Orleans, quite possibly my favourite meal the whole time I was there. We also had the chips with queso which were delicious and chips were refillable!
Everyone who worked there was super nice as well and really friendly - which was world's apart from the majority of service we received.
The venue is also SUPER cute, outdoor seating only with big umbrellas, would be the perfect place to spend a day with friends and drink and eat your way...
Read moreCame here on my way to pick up my Turo and The tacos were the most bland tacos I’ve ever tasted. Taco Bell has more flavor than this place. Mind you, there is nothing authentic about this place and you are really going for the atmosphere and perhaps the drinks and I don’t drink alcohol. Speaking of drinks, I asked what flavor of agua fresca they had and they said hibiscus tea. I already knew this was going to be some BS. They are not the same and nor are they interchangeable. Jamaica is the real name of this flavor of agua fresca and has the viscosity of blood. This was watered down hibiscus tea.
I told a friend about the experience and she told me they were amazing at the taco fest but terrible when she went to the brick and mortar. Perhaps they are using competition cooks for the fest and using bland Kyle for the actual restaurants.
Lastly, having whatever those seeds in my queso was off putting. It messes up the consistency of eating because one is not expecting seeds in their cheese. They should get the flavor profiles solid before making things look cute. I would recommend this place to people you don’t care about when they want to visit...
Read moreEasy ferry ride and short walk to this excellent spot. The neighborhood has excellent New Orleans architecture so the walk is great too. Beware, though, the last ferry to Canal is earlier than you'd guess.
When we were there the kitchen was slammed, so food came out slowly. Don't know if that's typical, but the kitchen is doing great work in a tiny space, so don't sweat a little wait.
Esquites was very good, but chips with all the dips has to be the go to. All were excellent. We had the fish tacos (excellent), a mushroom taco (excellent), and beef tacos (very good). The beef would be excellent most other places, but the fish and mushroom outshone it.
If I lived here I'd go to this place once a week. Really great spot in a city with lots...
