Before diving into the food, it’s only fair to acknowledge the highlight of our visit: the service. Our server was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming — the kind of hospitality that sets the tone for a great dining experience. Unfortunately, the food failed to follow suit. In fact, Charlie’s singlehandedly inspired me to start reviewing restaurants — to give praise where it is due, and to expose the overrated and underwhelming establishments dragging New Orleans’ food reputation into the ground.
Charlie’s Steakhouse may be billed as an “uptown staple,” but our experience revealed why New Orleans patrons — both local and visiting — often settle for mediocrity under the guise of tradition. The picture speaks for itself.
We ordered medium-rare strip steaks, a basic expectation at any reputable steakhouse. What we received were steaks served raw, with virtually no sear and laughable grill marks. For a $50 cut, this is inexcusable. A proper steakhouse has one primary obligation: get the steak right, every single time. Charlie’s didn’t even come close.
The meat itself was under-seasoned and uninspired, with a texture more reminiscent of an oven-baked roast than a seared steak. Just look at the edges — limp, rubbery, and completely devoid of any crust or crispness. It was disappointing to the point of absurdity. I brought the leftovers home, and even my cat turned her nose up at them.
Ironically, the best thing we ate was the potatoes au gratin — and that’s almost entirely thanks to the obscene amount of cheddar cheese baked into them. It was rich, gooey, and borderline excessive — but at least it had flavor.
Very rarely do I walk away from a meal genuinely regretting the money spent. This was one of those rare occasions. For the price and the reputation, Charlie’s Steakhouse delivered an experience that felt more like a parody of fine dining than...
Read moreComing from Vegas, I have been to a lot of high end steak houses that tout being the best steak in town! Many are older establishments from the early days of Vegas. However, I have ALWAYS been disappointed with the incorrect cook on steaks and poor quality of the meat! Many times I leave feeling like my wallet has been raped for something that I could have gotten from outback.
Here at Charlie's, I found a super casual steak house that doesn't have to puff it's chest to get a reputation. It's reputation is a little known secret of the locals. I am not even sure how my husband and I got so lucky to land on this jewel.
We started our evening with our server, Steve, letting us know that there is no menu! But that's okay, the options are few but are cooked to PERFECTION. As an appetizer, we were brought shoestring style onion rings which were sliced very thin and battered so lightly. They were super crisp and salted just enough. Steve was very attentive and when he saw we were almost done, he brought us a wedge salad and suggested we use the remaining onion rings as croutons. This made a classic wedge salad really pop!
The main course, and the piece de resistance of the meal, was the steak. The steaks were the BEST steaks I have EVER eaten. They come out on metal dishes sizzling with perfect criss cross char marks. Presentation is everything here. The steaks themselves are not seasoned too much, but that isn't necessary because this meat can stand on its own without any help! The steaks are super juicy and tender (my husband could cut his with a fork) and the temperature was just right! Hands down all the food was amazing!
Steve our server was awesome and very inviting. He made us feel comfortable and was filled with so much knowledge about the history of this quaint little establishnent. My husband and I will return everytime...
Read moreA very disappointing "steakhouse". A big chain restaurant will serve you better food than this place.
The restaurant is nothing special, if anything a bit run down. The insides are very aged and looks like the inside of a school cafeteria in a way. I think old school decor can be done well, but it just felt like there were few efforts to upkeep the dining room from when it first opened. We were seated downstairs so the upstairs may be different.
A ribeye(18oz!!) and a NY strip steaks were ordered a long with a "half order of onion rings", asparagus, and potatoes au gratin. This cost us in the ballpark of $130.
The onion rings were piled very high, were very greasy, and were very thin. I would market them as noodles instead of rings. Nothing to really write home about. The asparagus was acceptable but then again, I expected something delicious, not simply acceptable. The potatoes au gratin were the same. They were also very oily and greasy for no reason, just like the onion rings.
The ribeye steak was easily the worst steak I have ever tasted for the price($50!). Tough. It was ordered medium rare and the insides looked like mixed up raw ground beef. The ends were tough and it tasted bland.
The NY strip steak was the same. It was essentially alive in the middle, and had no flavor. The plate it came on was filled with so much fat and even that somehow managed to taste like it had no seasoning at all! My girlfriend and I both felt sick after eating here and we suspect it was from the insides of our steaks being literally raw.
I would not recommend this place to anyone and am very sad that I was unfortunate enough to think it would be a nice restaurant with good food. Do not go here. The prices are not worth the mediocre, bland, and...
