My quest for the best roast beef poor boy in the world finally led me to Domilise. I had been wanting to visit for some time now, but the universe always conspired against me. Once I was heading there for a poor boy when work called and I had to turn around. Another time I pulled up and saw a line outside the door. The last time I tried they were closed. This time I was lucky and found them open, and not very crowded.
As a friend so accurately described the interior, the place is a dive. To me, that is a great thing. Even the men's room is a dive where you have to stand on a wooden pallet to use the urinal. The run down, old look adds to the ambiance and lets you know you're in a neighborhood joint, not some purpose built fancy building.
The roast beef poor boy comes with creole mustard when you order it "dressed". This is different than most other poor boy shops and they made sure to let me know in advance. The poor boy was good, but didn't wow me. It was far superior to some I have tried, but fell short when compared to others. The sandwich used the correct bread (there are giant Leidenheimer bags on the wall when you enter), had a good gravy/meat ratio, but I think the creole mustard may have detracted from the sandwich. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love creole mustard, but I may have found one thing that I don't particularly like it on. Even if I had ordered it without the mustard, I don't think my rating would have changed. It was good, but for my tastes, I've had better.
In summary, Domilise has a good roast beef poor boy. While not the best I have had, if you're in the neighborhood and want a roast beef,...
Read moreDomilise's Po-Boy Shop is the best place to eat po boys in New Orleans - hands down! The staff and owner are very friendly, and the food is very good. You will not be disappointed. If youh leave hungry, that means you doing it wrong! Many locals, tourists, and famous folk alike frequent this place, which is off the beaten path. It's definitely worth traveling outside the French Quarter. I recommend the Anthony Bourdain po boy, a.k.a. the off menu special. It's very good and has fried shrimp, cheese, brown gravy, hot sauce, and much more. Get a fork! It's messy!
Edit: it's been a few years since I last visited Domilise's, and I'm happy to report that this place continues to be amazing, and that the only major change or upgrade to the joint is a signed photog of Arch Manning in full Longhorn gear. Hook-Em!
I don't know about you, but a po-boy from this place can fix some things for me! As always, I got the "Anthony Bourdain" off the menu special but this time I got oysters instead of shrimp and had two bottles of rootbeer. Man, it was the best dining experience of our vacation - for me at least. I was happy to bring the...

"Domilise's Po-Boy & Bar" is hard to decribe ... a place you must experience!!
WOW-riffic! tasty-riffic!! yummy-riffic!!!
I lack the words to describe the home-baked, over-stuffed, gravy-covered, tender-riffic roast beef po-boy on amazing French bread roll I just experienced.
My "half" po-boy was so over-stuffed I could have easily walked away full, eating half of the half ...
the 1st half was the "meal", & the 2nd half was my "desert" ... soooo tasty!
The legendary "Miss Dot" who greeted the locals for decades died in 2013, is credited for turning this once little bar into a haven for tasty NOLA po-boy's.
The spirit of "Miss Dot" lives on in people like "Mary Lou" who I consider a "Po-Boy Queen" ... skilled & personable!!
"Domilise's" is easily a "Run-A-Way Bill" Favorite eatery!!!!
I had a bottle of "Dixie" beer, so another bar closer to 666 ...
