I wanted to give this bar five stars and should, because the drinks and atmosphere are wonderful. However, my sister will no longer go there with me because the bartender was rude and insisted on putting a picture of her on the wall to embarrass her. I truly believe this bar has potential but the bullying regarding photos of people drinking Malort is bringing down the vibe. Overall, the outside seating and nice owners are a refreshing change after Cutters, but the last thing the Marigny needs is a bar with staff acting like it’s Chicago. Great beers and selection of spirits, nice owners, but the Malort Polaroid bullying (and Malort in general) needs a serious review. My sister and I were born here and she is still a local and will no longer meet me there.
I have not heard back so I sent an email
Hello, I am deeply saddened that as much as I enjoyed my initial experience at your bar, which has a good selection of spirits and is an amazing revamp from Cutters, I cannot patronize your establishment because my sister is actually going to a therapist. She is a lovely human being and had not been out much since COVID19 happened, and she was just trying to be friendly and try Malort. While I do appreciate Malort, I also think taking photos of women and putting them on the wall when the women don’t want their photos displayed is poor hospitality. I am offering this critique and suggesting that it’s made extremely clear that your policy to only drive display photos that make people (especially women) look as terrible as possible be explained before the bartender starts taking pictures. It is in the interest of privacy and not allowing body shaming that this practice be explained. I do appreciate the fact that dogs are treated so well and enjoyed taking my mutt to your establishment, but unfortunately, my sister is mortified by her experience and her picture being on the wall. I sincerely think y’all have good intentions but do need to make right with the local community and clearly ask for consent before displaying shameful images of customers. No offense to Malort, but can you please meet with me so I can identify the photo of my sister and have it removed from the display? I have frequented many bars nationally and managed a few in Chicago, and I have never seen a bartender humiliate a customer to such an extent. Please revise your training of bar staff and instruct them to clearly ask for consent before taking and displaying photo of people.
I trust you will do the right thing and that I can return and enjoy a beer...
Read moreCame in on easter with my dog to kill some time between errands. Had been here a few times before with and without my dog and had an enjoyable experience. Bartender was extremely curt, borderline rude upon "greeting" me. No worries I thought, it's a holiday/early/just their personality.
Then it starts drizzling so we come inside for a couple minutes. Went to go back out and the seats were a little wet. So I ask the bartender for a bar towel so I could wipe it off real quick. They go, curtly "for what" and then "it's raining so it's just going to be wet". I just asked to borrow a used bar towel to wipe off one seat.
The kicker is that when I went to order another drink, the bartender goes from very friendly small talk with the couple from out of town (the only others in the bar) to a straight up rude "what else?". At this point I'm just wondering if I did something wrong. They go right back to super upbeat small talk with the couple.
I'm a veteran of the hospitality industry and this is only the 2nd or 3rd bad review I've ever taken the time to write and post. Deeply...
Read moreI’m all for the vaccine and negative test requirements for entrance to the premises and safety of others, but when my friend’s LA wallet app wasn’t loading, she was asked to leave per the city mandate. The rest of us presented our vaccine cards and purchased drinks. We figured we’d hang outside on the sidewalk/street so she wouldn’t have to go home. Later the female bartender refused to serve me for attempting to purchase a drink for my friend, who was outside- on the street- but couldn’t provide proof of vax moments before. What gives you the right to decide what I can or can’t do with my OWN purchase OUTSIDE after I step off your premises? Or who I can or can’t share MY drinks with? No where in the city mandate does it say “you can’t buy things for individuals who can’t provide proof of vaccination.” Taking it too far and won’t be returning! This is not per the city mandate, which only specifies needing a vaccine card or negative test to enter the premises. And worst part of all, bartender kept leaving her mask down while making...
