We came here after my son’s graduation a few years ago. The free samples got us. I love pralines but don’t like pecans. It’s really hard to find a place that makes them creamy and also without pecans, so I usually end up just making myself. Southern Candymakers had a wide selection, and also had my request for no pecans, I bought about two dozen. Everyone in my party got the flavor that they wanted. Upon leaving the store of course I couldn’t wait to eat one and it was so good. While biting in the 2nd one, I tasted something that was not food!!! I broke the pecan candy apart it looked like a rope. Very similar to a mop rope or something along that size and texture. I was totally disgusted! We were still walking in Jackson Brewery so we immediately went back. I spoke with the manager who did NOT offer an apology, but said oh I can just replace your order. This was not only a safety hazard, but a huge lawsuit! I will never patronize their business again, and I have told everyone about them. I can’t believe they are still open because I know I could not have been the only one that this happened to. Lack of customer service and professionalism is everything. I only gave 1 star because inside of the store smelled divine and was visually appealing.

Probably, one of the best, if not the best, pralines Ive tasted thus far.

Once you have a sweet potato praline you will never want anything else. The texture is perfect - light snap on the outside that immediately melts in your mouth with the firm bite of pecan for a perfect balance. The flavor is deep, rich, and very sweet potato forward. We spent our visit trying every praline NOLA had to offer and Southern Candymakers had the best original praline and our favorite overall, the aforementioned star, the sweet potato. Do yourself a favor and grab a divinity while you’re at it. They are the lightest and most fluffy bite you can imagine. Wonderfully sweet, topped with a pecan. Don’t get too excited, you can crush these easily. The staff at this location were amazing - friendly, efficient, and love candy. They also offer samples, even if you already know what you want (and if they recognize you from the day before and the day before that and the day before that). A must visit when you’re in New Orleans. (Pralines not pictured because we ate them immediately.)

This is an email I sent to the company three days ago. Having absolutely no response, I am posting it again in the hopes that they use this genuine feedback as incentive to improve:

Having been a loyal customer for many years I was very surprised that my seven orders which were placed on December 8th were so badly handled this year! I called and checked on them twice and was told first that only two of the seven were processed and on the second call on Dec 22nd I spoke with Frank and he kindly left me a voicemail saying that he had located the remaining five orders and that they “were being made and shipped out today”!

When I called this morning (Dec 27h) to discuss this matter, I was tersely informed that “we don’t guarantee anything because Fed Ex doesn’t guarantee anything” and “since COVID many people’s orders have been screwed up”! Two horrific excuses and definitely not something a customer wants to hear. Additionally, it’s handy to blame Fed Ex if the orders were processed promptly but in fact, and by your own admission, 5 of these baskets weren’t even made until Dec 22nd. So in actuality, Fed Ex did an outstanding job getting them delivered within 5 days!

While it is always disappointing when Christmas gifts don’t get delivered until after Dec 25th, I think it was more disappointing and disheartening to get that awful glib response without any attempt to even look at the account to find out why the delay between the 8th and the 22nd for the 5 orders.

I think you are a fantastic company with a first class product and I hope you use this email as constructive feedback to improve your...

My history with Southern Candymakers begins long before I met them as a born and bred New Englander when living in Wayland MA outside of Boston. Starting around 1982 I homemade turtles for family and friends for Xmas every year. People liked them so much that they became a must-do for me for years. That is till one of my several trips to New Orleans about 20-25 years ago when I was staying at what was probably the La Galerie Hotel on Decatur St. So it was during a short walk along Decatur St that I met Southern Candymakers as a non-descript storefront with hanging plastic sheets for a front door. So I walked in. And there was a display case with tortues which I instantly recognized as the turtles of my past. And they were good. So good that I decided to thereafter to buy tortues from Southern Candymakers for all my Xmas fans. Not a hard decision to make because not only were turtles a labor of love to make, they are frankly, a lot of work. I have bought tortues and other confections from Southern Candymakers ever since on and off and they are now my go-to store for all candy I wish to send to anyone for any reason. And of course, Xmas 2023. So, sorry Southern Candymakers, no one recommended you to me, you were just an accident of traveling and moving around the US. And thank you Southern Candymakers for your enduring presence near and far from...
