We can agree or disagree on beauty, but there are universal things as symmetries or golden cuts, or fascinating mixes of styles and cultures. New Orleans is a melting pot ever since it was founded In 1731 and one of the best sample is Jackson Square. I will not go into details what this St. Louis Cathedral always reminds me of, but the two Palais on each side of it built like Grand Palais from the France, completed by the two side buildings in red bricks on each side of the square, very much reminding on Place des Voges in Paris in its neo-classicism, embracing a square with fountain, a monument, an American Flagg enlighten in the evenings. The park is full with Bananas and other tropical plants and was originally probably open towards the Mississippi. That’s the structure. But what makes this place so special is it’s change over the day, what people it all offers a home or about at least a harbour four their life. At Decatur Street, across from Cafê du Monde, you will find almost all day long the horse tours for the Tourists. Usually arround sunset, the guided city tours meet around the cathedral. While the stores and shops around the Square are well sorted, the Streets outside the park are during the day mostly the spot for artist, wanna be’s or rarely really talented cartoonists while as soon as the light fades, it becomes the spot for women with special gifts who offer their palm and tarot card reading talents to other people. Personally, I would highly recommend not to waste the time of these people If one is not open to it. Asides thatnwith prices from 20$ to 70$ (some would call it rip off) the limits for just a hoax is crossed long before these prices. But that is were we most a-knowledge the different cultures and heritages also by the history of New Orleans being the big slave trading place in the south. He come to that point where in New Orleans is a melting pot of many different cultures, traditions, histories and ghosts. And if you know ask: Was Madame Cindy right about you? Of course she was! That is her profession! But what really surprised me was how straight she pointed certain things out.
So far so good and fascinating. Now, what a European drives a little crazy is the fact that almost every shop (some of them will get reviewed specifically) has its own Opening hours. That makes an efficient visit in case one wants to shop almost impossible. Even more as some stores do not even have published their working hours. A must have while visiting New Orleans is going to Jackson Square, walk around, enjoy the spirit and the energy and definitely stop by St....
Read moreJackson Square is hands down one of the most iconic and picturesque spots in New Orleans. With St. Louis Cathedral towering over the square, street performers on every corner, and artists lining the fences with their work, it’s got that classic, vibrant French Quarter energy. It’s the perfect place to people-watch, take in the architecture, or just sit on a bench and soak in the weirdness that makes New Orleans, well… New Orleans.
But let’s talk about the elephant in the room—or rather, the giant Catholic church in the middle of it all. St. Louis Cathedral is undeniably stunning, but it’s also a reminder of how deeply Christianity has embedded itself into the city’s history. There’s something oddly surreal about watching tarot card readers, fortune tellers, and street performers do their thing in the shadow of this towering symbol of Catholicism. It’s a mix of holy and hedonistic, which pretty much sums up New Orleans as a whole.
Christianity itself? Kind of weird when you think about it. A whole religion built around a guy who was born from a virgin, walked on water, and turned water into wine (okay, that last one is admittedly cool). Then there’s the whole ritual of drinking his "blood" and eating his "body" every Sunday—which, if you remove the religious context, sounds straight out of a horror movie. And yet, this faith has shaped so much of the world, including this very square.
At the end of the day, Jackson Square is a perfect snapshot of New Orleans’ contradictions—deeply religious yet wildly free-spirited, historical yet always changing. Whether you’re here to admire the art, listen to a jazz band, or just question the strangeness of human belief systems, it’s a spot that never...
