Very disappointing experience. Iām here on vacation with my boyfriendās family and we were all very excited to try this local bakery. There were 6 of us in our group and from the moment we walked in we were greeted with sour attitudes and all around unfriendliness.
Two women behind the counter. One walks up to the other and without speaking to us we hear her tell the other woman that weāre all together so only one of them will get our pastries boxed up. We told them weāre paying separate and they said theyāll still box them together. We told them weāre staying at different places and they seemed really put out to have to divide our 3 separate orders.
Then a surge of customers came in behind us and the grumpiest guy Iāve ever seen came up from the back to help. He rung up my boyfriendās parents and when his mom asked to verify that he rung up the correct items he looked at her, didnāt respond and walked away. She waited at the register and when he came back to ring up another order she asked again. He glared at her and told her what heād rung up. It was correct so she said āthank you.ā He again didnāt respond and just walked away.
Thankfully one of the women rung up our other 2 orders. She wasnāt as rude but still short with us. She didnāt confirm what items she rang up for which order and at that point we didnāt care to confirm. We just paid. My bf got a copy of his receipt and of course it wasnāt itemized. So we still donāt know if they did it right.
They rang up several other customers while we were waiting for the one woman to box up our order. I noticed most of their customers are regulars. They come in knowing exactly what they want, they pay with cash and they leave their change for a tip. It seems if you donāt follow this norm, they really donāt want you there.
Now, aside from the service, the desserts are fine. Not great. Iāve been to France and this bakery has some vaguely French pastries but mostly American. Seeing how disappointing the French pastry options were I decided to abandon that goal. I got a slice of cheesecake. It was fine. My boyfriend got a cinnamon roll because thatās what he gets at every bakery. This is where they failed horribly. Itās almost all dough, hardly any cinnamon, disappointing icing and no butter. I asked the woman if the cinnamon roll was hot (I would have been pleasantly surprised if she said yes) but alas no. She said āno, theyāre room temperature.ā Iām honestly not sure they bake half of their desserts. They look store bought and then placed on trays for display. Especially the cinnamon rolls. We also bought a whole key lime pie. Weāre waiting to meet up with everyone to try that but it looks like your average key lime pie.
Every other place weāve gone to in New Smyrna has been super friendly. Having been to Paris and seeing how rudely they treat Americans, I can say thatās the most authentic aspect of this...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI ordered a birthday cake 10 days in advance for my grandfather's 90th party. It was themed marine corps and we had a ton of family flying in to celebrate (about 30-40 people in all). I wanted to try something different and more extravagant so I phoned in my order to this place. The woman who answered my call was very prompt, attentive and the call only took a few minutes. After confirming my specifications, I pre paid (very reasonable price) and agreed to pick up the cake 2 hours before the party. The day of the party arrived and I headed over to the bakery. For a rainy day, they had several customers but were handling them all efficiently. When it was my turn, I notified the young lady at the counter that I was picking up my cake. She went to the back and brought it out. Upon seeing it, I noticed that something was wrong. It was not the design I originally requested. I immediately but politely brought it to her attention. She told me she would look into it and got on the phone with the decorator. It was apparent they had messed up my order. Apologetically, she went to the back of the store to notify management. A few moments later, Serge, (the head baker?) came out and asked me how I wanted the cake decorated (only the decor was incorrect, the flavoring of the cake was what I originally wanted). He promised to redo it AND deliver it to our location of the party before it started. I was very impressed with his quick admission that they made an error but more impressed with his determination to make it right. I gave him all the information he needed and sure enough, he arrived about 30 min ahead of the party start time, in the rain, to deliver the cake. He walked it inside and showed it to me and it was so beautiful, beyond my expectations. He again apologized and gave me a gift certificate for the bakery as an additional token of his desire to make amends for the error. He shared with me a personal story of his own family experience when his father turned 90 and how special it was and how he wanted to make sure that we had a good experience to make the occasion pleasantly memorable. Never was there any attitude or feelings of impatience from anyone at the bakery, just a strong customer service ethic and warmth. Thank you to this bakery, I highly recommend them and will most definitely use them from now on for any family events. The cake was a highlight to the party- everyone complimented how pretty and delicious it was!! Sincerely, one of the best cakes I...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOur extended family was heading out of town the day after Christmas. We were so excited to try this place. Walking in, it was delightful to see the beautiful pastries. Almost immediately that feeling faded. The people behind the counter were outright rude. The one who served us seemed to resent that we asked for 9 breakfast sandwiches. She huffed to the back and re-emerged to inform us she only had eggs for 4. No problem, some of us will have lunch sandwiches. Giving our orders, I asked for dijon. She said, ādo you want dressing on the sideā? I asked, ādo I want dijon on the sideā?She was visibly irritated that I didnāt know they make their own dressing, and huffed again to explain it to me. She left to fill our order and we looked to see what else we wanted. The second woman was serving others, so my son got in line to buy his own pastries. The woman assumed because he was part of our group that he had already been helped, so she ignored him and served everyone else. We finally got everything we wanted and left to eat our sandwiches outside. No place to sit, but we stood under a corner of the roof saying our goodbyes and munching our delicious sandwiches. Then I got a better look at the lettuce in mine. It was not only old, brown, and wilted, but there were the parts of lettuce no one can eat. Did she use those parts because she was upset with me? Or were they all just pissed to be working the day after Christmas? Way to ruin a great sandwich. Our group spent well over $100 and everyone loved the food, but we are...
