Akiyama — Restaurant in New York

Was looking for a new place to try out in this part of town and stumbled upon this Japanese restaurant. Thought I got lost since the restaurant was somewhat located next to a strip of stores and across the street from a mall. The service is good. They refilled my cup of tea without me asking for a refill, but I must say the food is just mediocre. The pork strips in the tonkatsu was hard to chew even though the cutlet was thin. The shrimp in the shrimp tempura maki was non-existent. I was eating rice with seaweed and tempura crunch. The beef in the beef teriyaki was quite thick as well resulting in the necessity of using a knife to cut the beef into smaller pieces. The shrimp tempura appetizer came with a hot soup for dipping, which was nice. It made eating the shrimp tempura manageable instead of biting into oil as one may experience sometimes. Decent sushi place but it ends there. They claim a 2 hour time limit for the unlimited sushi & sake but don't expect that. We were refused service after 1.5 hours with them claiming we had been there for over 2 with no lenience. Absolutely unacceptable. Convenience for the staff is weighted over guest experience. Additionally, an 18% tip is added but their math is wrong. The tip they add is actually 21.4% so expect that. Not a huge deal but trust was continuously broken all the way through. Very disappointed. This is hands down the best bang for your buck when it comes to sushi in NYC. Even compared to some of the more high-end places, you just will not find better quality sushi in the old school style.

Raymond, the owner, is a sweetheart and he shows his passion for his craft through the quality of his food. I’ve been coming to Akiyama for 7 years with my fiancé who has been going to Akiyama for nearly 20 years. We have never been disappointed or let down by a meal here.
