I’ve written many reviews for many restaurants across New York City, from the trendiest downtown spots to the tucked-away neighborhood staples. But Amarena? I’ve been keeping this one in my pocket. A hidden gem I’ve selfishly guarded for one simple reason: I didn’t want to spill the beans.
Because once the word gets out, this cozy little slice of Italy on the Upper East Side won’t stay secret for long.
Yes, the food is outstanding. Yes, the ambience is charming and warm. But the real secret weapon of Amarena is Miguel.
Miguel isn’t just a server. He’s the soul of the place. A true hospitality magician who somehow reads your mind before you even sit down. Every visit feels like he’s been expecting you. He anticipates what you need, and somehow makes the food taste even better and not just because it’s delicious, but because he ensures it’s made exactly the way you like it.
Once, for a dear friend’s birthday, he made the impossible happen!!!! A plate of french fries. Not on the menu. Never has been. But he knew it was her favorite, and he made it happen because that’s what Miguel does. He cares.
I’ve been to Amarena with groups of six, eight, even more. We’ve gone when Miguel wasn’t there. And without fail, the night ends with someone at the table whispering, “Where’s Miguel?” Because somehow, the spark is missing.
So here’s the deal: if you’re going to Amarena (and you should), do yourself a favor. Call ahead. Make sure Miguel is working. He’s not just a server, he’s an experience. The food is a masterpiece thanks to the chef, who creates incredible dishes night after night. But Miguel? He’s the bridge between the kitchen and your table. Without him, something gets lost in translation.
Amarena is a dream. Miguel makes it...
Read moreI had high expectations for this restaurant, but unfortunately, Saturday my experience was disappointing. The service was good with long waits and The food did not meet my expectations either — it was bland and poorly presented. Additionally, I noticed an older gentleman with white hair inside the bar area who appeared intoxicated and seemed to be having a few drinks, which was unprofessional and quite disappointing. I left the restaurant not wanting to come back, but I wanted to give another shot and came back the very next day on Sunday with my daughter, and again I was not pleased. With minimal friendliness While dining, When I asked a woman who appeared to be a manager about the wine list, she seemed completely unfamiliar with Italian wines. I also inquired about allergies related to a specific dish, but she was unsure and showed little concern about helping me. It seemed she was unaware of what was happening in her restaurant, leading me to believe she may not be qualified for her managerial role.
Furthermore, the cleanliness of the dining area was below acceptable standards. I hope the management takes these issues seriously and makes the necessary improvements, as I genuinely want to see this place succeed. Regrettably, based on my recent visit, I cannot recommend...
Read moreThis was my second time visiting. I had a very good first experience in terms of food and service. This is why I decided to go back with my husband for our anniversary dinner. I wrote this in the resy notes section when making the reservation. There was no acknowledgment, nothing verbal of our anniversary nor a candle or anything in our dessert. The food and service were also disappointing, especially for the prices charged. Appetizers tasted decent but small portions. The chicken parm was overcooked and served room temperature- I expected way better for spending $37 on this when it is not even served with a side or pasta. The crab pasta dish was better and more flavorful the first time I came. This was overall a disappointing dinner and shows the restaurant is not consistent when it comes to food preparation and there is no attempt to give customers that extra service. Usually restaurants get better the longer they’re open but I had the opposite experience. Maybe we went on an off night but for the prices Amarena is charging, the food and service should be better and more consistent. I do not recommend...
