The food and atmosphere was good. They completely butchered the order and then gave attitude about the bill so i just paid and left. Will not be back.
Full story:
I ordered one order of costilla quesadilla, birria tacos, carne asada, and chips + Guac. When the food came there was the costilla quesadilla and chips + guac as ordered, an extra birria taco order, and the carne asada had been replaced by a different mystery taco. I looked over to the waiter with a confused look and he promptly came over and confirmed that he recorded our order as it had been ordered. He took one order of the Birria away and we were left with nearly what i initially ordered, The costilla quesadilla and chips + guac, one birria taco order, and the mystery taco that replaced our carne asada. I didn't want to complain so we ate. 10 minutes later the actual carne asada tacos arrive.
When the bill came, everything that had been to brought to the table was on the bill whether it had been taken away or not. This included costilla quesadilla, birria tacos X2, carne asada, mystery taco and chips + Guac. The manager came over to collect the bill and when i asked him about it i got immediate attitude from him back. I did not want to go back and forth with him and the waiter who took the initial order and then confirmed our order after it was delivered incorrectly was no where to be seen. He took off $20 and i settled bill and left.
The food was very good. I don't know where the communication broke down but i do feel that i was done wrong by. Maybe i should have complained more until the order was delivered as ordered but that didnt seem right to do and has never been my style. The experience as a whole was good without this issue. I hope it is a one off and others don't have this experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant with so many other good places in the city to eat and places that care about doing right by...
Read moreI have eaten in this restaurant multiple times before and the food is good and different from other Mexican restaurants. I know it gets busy, so that’s whyI made a reservation through Open Table for last night at 8:00 pm for a table inside. My friends and I arrived at 8:03 pm. It was a busy night which it’s understandable for a Saturday night. However, they seemed to have given away our table and didn’t have any tables to seat us. The hostess told us to wait five minutes which we did. My partner notice that the hostess was admitting to the manager that they gave away our table. We still waited outside like we were told, but we were upset because we were there on time. The manager comes out very confrontational asking us if there was a problem. We explained we made reservations. He said that the hostess told him we were rude, which it was not true. We felt he was ready to punch us if we questioned the fact we were already waiting for ten more minutes past our reservation. We waited a little bit more. The manager asked if we only wanted to sit inside, which I replied yes and that’s why we made a reservation! After ten more minutes waiting, at this point almost 8:20, we decide it wasn’t worth waiting any longer. I went inside and informed the manager to release our reservation. He then offered the first round of margaritas on the house. I told him it was not a good start and we would rather just leave than experience even more problems, which seemed almost predictable. I work in customer service and I know working under stress is difficult, but there should never be an excuse to treat people like you are going to start a fight for no reason. It would’ve been a different experience if the manager would’ve said: “we are sorry we don’t have your table ready. If you don’t mind waiting for a few minutes while we clean it. The first round of margaritas is on me”, but that was...
Read moreToloache 82nd st offers a good (albeit tight) venue and good food, several ‘creative Mexican’ dishes, but it has become a very pricey dining experience and the meal is simply no longer price competitive with other good dining options in the area. At the end of the day this is a Mexican restaurant, it is not a Daniel Boulud dining experience. The small drink servings range from $16 to $18 on average ($21-$23 with tip, tax) and the small size and ‘iced down’ servings are clearly intended to strongly encourage double orders. The food itself has also gotten pricier. Expect to spend $150 to $170 for two people ($80+ all in for ‘two equals one’ drinks for each person). Having been an adjunct professor at the Culinary Institute of America Singapore branch, and now living in this NYC neighborhood, I’ve experienced food and value. This restaurant offers no early ‘Happy Hour’, unlike many of the restaurants in New York, and does not serve lunch other than on the weekends. This might account for the need to significantly raise the per person ticket price to dine here. The food quality is good, but it does not justify the current cost. So many alternatives in the area abound. If it’s Mexican, hit the restaurants on Upper East 2nd Avenue. The food more traditional, the atmosphere is less ‘hip’ but still lively, and the cost will allow your pocketbook another night, or three! of dining out. Or venture further afield to the great Hispanic restaurants in the local community around 102nd...
