I've been to this awesome old joint many, many times over the years--usually stopping in for a burger & a few beers before/after shows @The Beacon. However, this trip was soooo disappointing. Service was horrid & the food came out literally 2 minutes after I ordered it--clearly someone's "Ooops!" order which sat cold in the window. My mac-n-cheese bites arrived with no garnish, dipping sauce, was cold & congealed. I decided to not order a meal... Look, I worked in the service industry--particularly as a bartender--for over 25 years. I'm ALWAYS polite ("Please hun;" "Thanks babe!") & an over-tipper. (I'm female, in case you wondered & just super friendly.) Well, the 2 young women on staff this day were the worst. The 1st one I interacted with was a tiny Asian girl who I swear was the rudest person I've ever met anywhere. When a bar isn't that busy & a customer sits down & you SEE her, at least make eye contact, acknowledge her! Holy cow, even when she finally came over she never said a word, only stared at me blankly when I ordered a beer & walked away. It's not like she couldn't speak because she was chatting up other folks at the other 2 ends of the bar & I'm directly in the middle. She never began pouring my Guiness until I asked the 2nd girl. Same when I asked for Wi-Fi password--stared at me like I had 2 heads & walked away. No, "Ok, gimme a sec, let me check" or whatever. Just walked away for like 7-8 minutes. The slim white girl was only marginally more attentive but still lacked people skills. I wound up asking her when the 1st girl overheard, wrote it down on a piece of paper & shoved it in my face. You know, I still tipped them way over what they deserved because I'm a nice person like that. BUT, I'd turn right around & walk out if that Asian woman is on staff again. How sad that these millenials have zero personality & no clue how to properly interact with the public, ESPECIALLY when your job is as a bartender in the greatest city on earth in one of the oldest, most charming Ale Houses in the world. Shame, shame on the people who just hire...
Read moreStopped in with my husband early on a Saturday afternoon. Ordered 2 beers (1 tap, 1 bottle) and a side of fries. Many tvs with different televised events, not too loud, clean. Fries were great. Hours later, what does not sit right with me is how this establishment handled the credit card processing fees. Now in NYC, those fees are passed onto the customer which I think is ridiculous but it is what it is. The website states that there is a 3.8% discount when paying cash - which leads me to believe that they are claiming their processing fee is (cost to swipe a credit/debit card) 3.8%... which is suspiciously high. However, that was not my initial grievance. My husband laid cash out on the bar, asked for the check, and when we received it there was this "operating fee" which I assume to the credit card processing fee. I asked the bartender if this reflected the cash discount and she said no, printed a new receipt, placed it on the plastic tray and it felt like she threw it at my husband.
Other restaurants we frequent, have two totals on the printed receipt. This place does not. They did not ask how we were planning to pay, although I think it was obvious. Had I not asked, I feel that she would have adjusted the receipt, subtracting the credit card processing fee AFTER we left and pocketed that fee with her tip. I do not know this for sure, had we required change... Perhaps she would have removed that fee. It just left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Bottom line: Check your receipt for that operating (credit card) fee, and make sure that it is removed if you intend on paying in cash.
Note to management: Be more transparent. Include a note on the receipt about the processing fee. Better yet, include two totals. Cash total and credit card total. Many establishments do this, so it can be done.
Also... 3.8% is suspiciously high. Shopify's maximum charge is 3.4% +15¢ per swipe and that is if you MANUALLY enter a...
Read moreThis place is located right down the street from the Beacon Theater. We went to the Beacon Theater on 73 Street and saw Paul Simon. Afterwards we wanted food so we asked a local person who was walking her dogs and she sent us here. Upon entering we were greeted and seated. When our waiter showed up, he asked if we wanted drinks . I told him I had a long drive ahead of me so he was happy ☺️ to bring some water for everyone. We downloaded the menu onto a phone, and when the waiter showed back up we ordered. One person in our party 🥳 order a pasta dish with thick sauce and no meat. They really enjoyed the pasta dish. Another person in our party ordered fish and chips with a bun so they could make the fish into a sandwich they really liked the food. I ordered a turkey burger which came with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Plus a side of mayanase which I asked for, Plus I got an order of their onion rings. 😋. This was fantastic the whole meal was cooked perfectly. The onion rings were crispy and crunchy and the onion portion of the ring was cook excellent wasn't mushy or over cooked. The bar was a bit loud but that's okay when your food comes out fantastic 😍😍😍. The waiter we had was wonderful. This establishment has bathrooms available, on a scale of one to ten I give this place a eleven. Note they do have outside seating available up until a certain hour. I would visit this bar restaurant again...
