I really enjoyed this restaurant and would like to comment on all the individual things I noticed!!
This place is pretty decent. In my opinion, the only decent sushi spot in 8th AVE. Prices are reasonable. Food is good.
The addition of ASEA Bowl is a good thing; it's worth it. Sushi is a hit or miss. On certain days, it tastes great, and on other days, the rice and fish doesn't sit well. Sometimes the proportion is all wrong. The Philadelphia Roll has a bunch of cucumbers and a little bit of smoked salmon and cream cheese (am I only paying for a cucumber roll?) Noodles are delicious, too, except a little salty on my behalf. At one point, my friend and I ordered a lunch box set each. The amount of seaweed salad they placed in our lunch box was kinda sad. Usually, they would give a good amount. However, that day, it was like someone scooped some seaweed salad with one small spoon and placed it in our order. If they didn't have enough that day, they should've notified us.
As far as service goes, some of the staff members are friendly and would greet you with a smile, but some aren't. I would consider myself a regular customer, however, lately, I feel super awkward to even go there. I come in, pay, and they wouldn't smile or say thank you...no one greeted either...so what's the point of ordering there? I understand that it might be a long day for them or a bad day, but to work at a restaurant, friendliness should be in the job description. 4 stars only because of this reason.
I would definitely recommend this place to friends and I believe I have a friend hooked on their food now. I just wish they can fix their service and maybe update their sushi menu.
Delivery - My friend ordered something here and she doesn't live that far (like a block and a half away)... She complained to me that it took an hour to get there. What's up with that? Pick-Up - Roughly takes around 15 - 20 min depending on what you ordered. Dine-In - Good atmosphere and good music selection for a young...
Read moreI am a world traveller & a foodie. 3.5 stars if there was the option. I come here when I do not want to travel too far. The upscale asian ambiance is nice for the upcoming sunset park neighborhood. Lunch is excellent for the overall value, so come for lunch indeed. Service is good & but can be improved . However dinner is pricey based on quality of cuisine/chef skills. The habachi with mix veggies and onion is pretty good, the steak and the salmon is flavorful, well made. The noodle soups are not bad either :) Bascially kitchen prepared food is fine.
Where they faulter is the sushi. -- a very delicate skill. The sushi chefs need to step up their game for the price point doesn't match the quality of ingredients & sushi chef skill. It varies and isn't consistent. Sometimes the sushi chefs technique is sloppy with the thickness of the rice, the knife cutting of the fish & how the overall roll is made. The way the fish is cut and how the rice is made is super important too. I've had rolls with big squares of fish rolled with thick chunks of rice. Other times it executed above average and is okay.
Taste wise, the sushi needs to have a Bam effect. There is no bam effect here. The seaweed and how the sushi vinegar rice is made has a lot to do with it. Then comes the quality grade of fish and vegetables. After that , you would look at how it is cut and rolled. Some of their special rolls is pretty good, but it doesn't stand out from the rest of the other Japanese restaurants Nyc has to offer. I hope the can gradually improve on this as they have potential to grow. However if a better sushi place opens up nearby, they wouldnt last. Also the owner, could come off a bit...
