Will likely never come back here again. Sure as a venue it is...serviceable, but is clearly falling behind the new and modern Brooklyn venues and passing it off as "character." Dont let the other reviews fool you "oh I saw my fave band here and got a good beer and so 5 stars." I went there for the first time and with no preconceived notions and was HUGELY disappointed.
My girlfriend and I came for a listed 7:30 show on a rainy Tuesday night. The place was so empty and filled with random junk (turned out to be band equipment strewn about the place where you walk in) that we actually thought it was closed and as there was no one anywhere, including behind the bar, we took it upon ourselves to find a table and hunt down some service. Turns out that service would never arrive.
It was top to bottom rough, and I have an easy and forgiving pallet. We ordered wings, and got 8 of the dinkiest, Costco wings you'd ever seen, clearly precoated in a sickly sweet, sticky resin that can only be described as tasting like take-out Chinese food. The sauce was definitely not fresh, and the bones crumbled with each bite. Gag. As a change of pace we ordered the fried cauliflower, and that was....prepared the exact same way, and tasted the exact same! Like limp frozen vegetables deep fried in old oil. This was brought out to us by a random kitchen staffer, or honestly he might've been in a band for all we know. There was no waiter to ask for utensils, salt, pepper, water, napkins or anything. It felt like eating at your friends house, who says help yourself and then leaves so you awkwardly sit there.
We had ordered more food, but only those two things, wings and cauliflower, came out. When we had finished those, and a good twenty minutes later, our bowl of fried rice came out, along with an adventurously ordered salmon ball. My girlfriend bit into the salmon ball, spit it out into a napkin with a face, and said she could tell just from smelling it it was off, and sure enough, tasted off. The fish was rotten and smelled as such! So we went up and gave it back to the bartender because again, no service anywhere. The fried rice needed everything or anything, a sauce or salt or flavor. It was severely lacking, and made me long for Chinese takeout. Maybe they should have Faith's Chinese cater their bar/venue and save the cooking for chefs that take pride in their culinary art. When we asked the bartender for plates to share the rice (we had no plates at all, just ate out of the serving trays), she left for five minutes and returned with TEACUP SAUCER SIZED PAPER PLATES like it was a church bbq.
After all that, our bill was $80. I feel robbed! They certainly won't be fooling me again, nor anyone I can steer away. I don't know about their brunch but hopefully it comes from Peter Luger's next door!!
I truly don't understand how this place has remained open as long as it has, it looks like the pre-op bars on Bar Rescue, before the makeover and overhaul. The venue needs a deep clean and a new sound system, lots of feedback and clipping. But my biggest problem with the show was it was listed as 730 and the headliner didn't go on until 1030. That's insane. It's a Tuesday, even other bars are closed at that point.
If it exists solely on the goodwill of its name or it's hipster denizens, then that ship is quickly sailing on them, and new management might be...
Read moreFor context, I want to begin this review by clarifying that I am grateful for the no-cost opportunities this venue provides to New Yorkers. There are very few venues and brands willing to provide services free of charge, and I recognize the effort this venue puts in providing good music experiences.
However, my review today may be encapsulated in a one-star rating due to my poor experience with venue management and health and safety of venue-goers. Today was suppose to be a fun and exciting night for my friends and I, but it was tainted by (a) lack of consideration for a safer venue capacity limit and (b) poor oversight with optimizing space to ensure a quality experience. While I recognize that specific decisions and planning may have affected my overall experience--therefore creating a negative bias in association with this venue--I believe there could have been greater intervention in providing a quality experience for venue-goers who were there since opening. It was questionable to me that people were still being accepted into the space close to the main act; while this format works in certain larger stadiums, clubbing spaces, and bars, I believe this was a major problem in the venue with the smaller floor space.
Despite the poor oversight, venue-goers did their best in accommodating concert-goers who were separated from their friends. Things out of one's control, such as a need to use the bathroom or a persons feeling unwell due to a majority of people being skin-to-skin, made into question whether these experiences were a reflection of the individual or a greater party at play; I believe its the ladder, but I will take some accountability too.
My issue is not targeted at any specific staffing or persons supporting the night. It is more-so with whoever (or whatever) was in-charge of approving the human capacity limit and in-charge of creating policies regarding last-entry times. I understand there were not-guaranteed factors in tonight's venue live performance, but I am disappointed that there was no greater effort in ensuring people's wellbeing in observation of wait-lines and anticipated concert-goers who claimed...
Read moreBaby's is kinda my ish. First lemme say this is Williamsburg and they go hip here. I mean being hip here is like being a Packers fan in Green Bay. It's inescapable. It just happens to you. And when you do it you go BIG. So walking in here with a muffin top and a fanny pack is practically gonna get you arrested. The place would probably close because rumors circulating about an unhip person being there.
Probably all that ain't make it sound that appealing but just be cool and it's cool. I spent a few shwasty nights here and also had brunch the next morning and enjoyed the hell out of it every time. The bartenders were nice and the specials were pretty good. $6 whiskey shot and bottled High Life is pretty good for something this happening son. Also the $3 Pink Baby was a nice lil boozy slushie though I had to have like four before I felt anything. As for brunch it's affordable, but relative to the size of the portion it's too much. The bfast potatoes were kickin and the bacon was so good I practically punched the guy next to me, but the portions were so small I probably could have eaten all of that in two bites if I tried really hard.
As for the venue it's a nice space, sparkly stage that's high enough, the sound is good (actually loud as F at times), they open up the wall behind the main bar in the chillin room or w/e it's called so you can watch from way back there if you want. So popular at CMJ times that you can practically just walk in and expect free drinks from some sponsor, but don't tell sad dads that or they'll come in and drink it all. In the main room you'll see someone really fashionable DJing, and secretly they usually work for a label or play in a band that's cool to like, but you won't recognize their face.
The only bad things are you aint gonna get cell phone service worth nutts, and the men's room bathroom stall is approximately the size of a crouton.
Overall a recommended place to hang out in W'burg. Ya boi's rating:...
