I co-found a community pop up and for our last event the theme was natty wines/high Tea. We wanted to keep the food options ethnic and I stumbled upon Brooklyn Baklava. A quick browse of the menu and a 2 minute phone call was all I need. Mohammed was so kind, professional, honest and accommodating. Talking to him made me feel like I’ve known him for a good while already- such a familiar spirit.
We were swamped with the event so my co-founder trekked out to Bay Ridge to pick up our order and bought an additional assortment of sweets. The baklava are EXCEPTIONAL in every sense of the word. Full stop. They are not cloyingly sweet or sticky, just the right amount of crispy pastry, richness and a touch of syrup at the bottom, the flavors are bold yet delicate and there a slightly floral aftertaste. Magnificent craft. I can’t even fully explain it. Our guest ran us down all night about the baklava AND the Katafi. They were gone in about 2 minutes after we set the desserts out. I was sooooooo happy and just astounded.
Mohammed has FOREVER clients in us and I encourage anyone on the fence to do themselves a favor and just go and...
Read moreThis place had a promotion on a website where for a set price, you usually get a goody bag with a few items, part of the food non-wasting mindset.
I figured now was a good time to try their baklava, seeing as to how that's what this place seems to be all about. Heck, it's even in their name.
When I dropped by to pick up my "surprise" order, the Mexican girl behind the counter grabbed a box of something from the shelf, put it in a bag & handed it to me.
Turns out, that something didn't include any baklava samples. Rather, it was a box of some weird stale cookies, which were imported from Turkye. In fact, according to the label in the back(see photo) they were "produced" in Jan 2023.. a whole year ago! So terrible were they, even my dog who usually eats all sorts of snacks, refused to even try them.
Not sure why these folks bother participating in any promotion, because this promotion brought out the worst in them.
Suffice it to say, I won't be going back for anything else. I'll just stick to the tasty Greek baklava from Bay Ridge...
Read moreFinally we made it to Brooklyn baklava. It's been on my list for a while and I was across the street the other day and we decided to stop in for a pre-brunch nibble and to get some treats for later. The spinach pie was good. I like that they heated it up in the actual oven as opposed to a microwave. It was still a little bit cold so you have to be patient if you want them to heat it up and let them warm it a little longer. I love seeing the racks of Turkish delight waiting to be cut and packaged. They had all sorts of amazing looking treats and we bought a bunch of them. So far my favorite is the fresh pistachio riddled Turkish delight and the walnut baklava which was perfection. I hate goopy, wet baklava and this one was crisp on top with the perfect amount of sweetness and nuts on the bottom and a little bit buttery.
We are working our way through the other sweet and I will update as we taste them. The nougat was a little too...
