I have been going to this restaurant for over 5 years, and I love it! As I glance through the other reviews, what comes to mind is that you need to know the inside scoop on what to order... once you do, you'll have a fantastic dining experience!
So I'll walk you through the menu. First, breakfast. Egg platter, egg sandwich, french toast, pancakes, and Irish oatmeal are all highlights. The breakfast crepe you need to order eggs in it if you want them, and be aware the green peppers and mushrooms are canned.
Second, lunch. Salad favorites are mesclun greens, and walnut apple but I ask for fresh apples instead of sauteed. Sandwiches are good. Savory crepes are made with buckwheat flour and my absolute favorite is roasted chicken with mango red pepper sauce, all my friends love it too!
Finally, dessert. Be aware there are 2 sections for dessert crepes, and they are VERY different. As part of the main menu, there is "sweet crepes" and any of these with chocolate have something like Hershey's chocolate sauce. But on the back of the menu is the "chocolate lovers crepes" -- ALWAYS order these! They use real Belgian chocolate that has been crumbled from bars, and melt it into the crepe. The fruits (strawberries, blueberries, bananas) are always FRESH, and there are a zillion combinations I've tried from that list that are all delicious.
As for service, the owner Steve is a super friendly, nice guy, but he isn't always there. It's a bit of a guess how quick service will be, though I'll say in the past 6 months they seem to have hired more staff and updated with computer systems, so things are more efficient now. And of course it's always more pleasant to go when it's not super crowded, in other words avoid weekend brunch and dinner. Weekday dinner isn't very busy, and other times of day are light.
The overall feel of the restaurant is very pleasant, the decor is modern and trendy yet also homey and welcoming. It's not a very big place, but they use the space well without feeling TOO tightly packed. They have pretty enameled wood tables, a wall of windows with lots of natural lighting.
I highly recommend you try this restaurant, especially the savory crepes and the chocolate lovers crepes, keeping in mind my advice earlier! Again I've been coming here for over 5 years and watched various ways the restaurant has changed and modernized, and I just...
Read moreFirst impression: Last time I was here, it was probably about 10 years ago, and it was absolutely amazing. The customer service was on point, and the ambiance was exactly what I expected. It felt cozy. The food was absolutely incredible. I had at that time strawberries with some peach on a crêpe, and it was awesome. My son had a savory ham and cheese crêpe, and it tasted great.
This time around, I came with my daughter and my sister-in-law. We had Nutella crêpes with strawberry and also one with strawberry and banana, and they tasted amazing. However, I have to add that the customer service was not top-notch as it was before. Very negative at the beginning, first impressions. I would’ve left with the greeting that we received; the tone we were greeted in was not pleasant, and we were shooed away outside. Second impression, the same. My sister-in-law had a wobbly table, and her drink fell. I went inside to get paper towels, and when I told them about the incident, their response was less than satisfactory.
Their remark, "Oh, you made a mess?" came across as dismissive and unprofessional. I answered, "Well, yes, on your wobbly table." If it wasn't for my daughter needing or wanting food, we would have left. In addition, the waiter behind the counter seemed very angry and didn't seem to like what they were doing. It made us feel as though our presence and satisfaction weren't important to them. We felt uncomfortable and unwelcome.
On a positive note, our food waiter was very nice and attentive. He greeted us nicely and provided great service. If it weren't for the unpleasant experience with the others, we would have had a great time. However, considering the overall experience, I won't be returning to Crepes on Columbus. It's a shame because the crêpes themselves were exceptional in taste and quality. But the combination of the unwelcoming attitude, dismissive response to the spill, and the lack of attention from certain staff members has left a lasting negative impression.
I sincerely hope that the management takes these concerns seriously and works on improving the customer service aspect to match the outstanding...
Read morePREJUDICE OWNER! I have ordered take out from Crepes on Columbus before and the food was excellent. However, last Sunday, my family and I decided to dine-in for lunch. The service was ATROCIOUS! The food took over 35 minutes and the service staff never even came by to refill our coffee or answer us when we asked where the food was. The worst part was the "owner, Steve" was the most unprofessional RACIST I have ever encountered. When we spoke with him at the end of our meal, we told him about the very long wait and lack of service. As a manager myself in the restaurant business, I expected him to be apologetic and invite us back. Instead, he said it was an appropriate time to wait and that "you people" should get used to it. When I asked him what that meant, he said, "either you get it or you don't". As a person of color, I was extremely offended! In fact, his restaurant is located in a diverse neighborhood, and I cannot believe that prejudice people like him are still supported to stay in business.
When I told him I did not appreciate the comment, he told us to get out and caused a huge scene. I have never been so appalled and treated like a second rate citizen because of my racial background! I just wanted to pay my check and get out.
I would never return to that establishment ever again. Steve needs to realize that we no longer live in 1940s Alabama where it is okay to ignore customers of color and then make racial slurs. New York City has hundreds of great restaurants that do not judge their guests based on color, race,...
