Update to below review: The manager just called me back. And she was very apologetic, because I also mentioned that the waitress was rude to them, and that I instructed them not to leave a tip. I didn’t mention below, because that was already dealt with by not tipping. But she addressed the issue about the six pieces of sushi the girls were charged for. She told me that for a large group where it would amount to one piece per person — They wouldn’t normally charge for something like that and she was very apologetic for not being on the premises indicating Otherwise it wouldn’t have happened. She also offered either a refund or a gift card for the birthday girl. So that was kind of her. I know an owner or manager can’t always control their staff, but it results in reviews like the negative ones here. I added one more star, as a result.
I’m pretty sure they don’t do this to all customers. I have to say that EVERY other buffet and sushi all you can eat restaurant in this neighborhood (11235) never ever enforces this. They do have signs for it but in my 25 years here, NONE of them have EVER enforced it, especially if it’s a small amount of food. We had young teenage girls go in there for a birthday party today, and they were all mixed races. At the end, the girls were, of course, without parents, they had Six pieces of sushi left between six girls, so basically ONE single roll — which would’ve equated to each girl having one piece left of said roll left. You know these people charged them one dollar for each of those pieces that was left. So imagine you have a roll and just one piece of it is left - because it was six people. I think that’s absolutely atrocious. I definitely would not recommend anyone going there especially if you want your kids to have a nice time without parents. Because for something so ridiculous to be enforced against a group of kids who were full and didn’t know is absurd when they already paid Over $220, so to be so petty and charge them extra. So if you want to try something new, or you might not the freshness of the avocado or anything in the roll, don’t go there because they will charge you for something you can’t or don’t want to eat even if you didn’t over order even if you have one piece left on your plate. While the kids had a nice time, I was shocked when they told me this, and I would never send them here. All these kids live in this neighborhood and go to Bay Academy. And I will ensure none of us ever have a birthday...
Read moreCame in on a Sunday at 12:45 with our party of 6 to celebrate my Mom's birthday. We had tried the original location of E Sushi years ago (which I believe is now closed) and we liked it, so we had high hopes for this newer location. We tried a good variety of the menu items from the AYCE menu including the cooked/fried foods, regular rolls, specialty rolls, nigiri, and sashimi.
Cooked foods were your basic bland/oily tasting dishes that tasted pre-frozen. The only thing I liked was the seaweed salad and spicy kani salad because I like to mix the two together. The regular roll we had (salmon skin roll) was probably the best. The specialty rolls all tasted similar since most of them are doused in sauce, but the spider roll (soft shell crab) wasn't bad.
The nigiri and the sashimi was probably the worst of the bunch. There was SO much rice in the nigiri and I think this is how they get you to pay extra for unfinished food (which we ended up having to pay $5, which wasn't bad but still). They bring the food out in rounds. So they brought out all the cooked foods and apps first (which is fine and expected). But next they brought out the rolls (which are already bigger than your average regular/specialty rolls maybe by 50%). Then comes the nigiri and sashimi last. The amount of rice in one piece of nigiri is definitely enough for two pieces. The fish itself doesn't taste like anything. It's not like it went bad, it just doesn't taste like anything, which also applies to the sashimi, even though the sashimi is a thicker cut. We ordered 20 pieces of white tuna sashimi but half of them had a different color/texture. When we asked the waitress what type of fish it was, she told us it was yellowtail. We then told her we didn't order any yellowtail so she went to go check with the chef. She came back shortly and claimed that is was in fact white tuna. If it truly was, we were afraid to try it after that since it was clearly not the same fish.
Probably one of the worst AYCE experiences I've had. We all left stuffed afterwards, but not...
Read moreHonestly, not a great choice. This place is cheap but you more or less get what you pay for. The appetizers and hot food here are decent with an asterisk. The miso soup and edamame, staples of any modern sushi restaurant, were good, as were the "chicken sticks" (I guess they don't trust us to know what yakitori is?). The gyoza and the fried calamari were decent as well but not great. The "BBQ squid" was overcooked to the point of being way too chewy and had a very strong fishy flavor which leads me to think it is not fresh.
The sushi is universally disappointing. My friend and I got mostly rolls, and while nothing stood out as tasting bad (nothing tasted rotten or rancid), nothing stood out as tasting good either. The proportion of rice and other filler to fish was completely off - this is my first time seeing the outside rice of a roll looping back into the roll. The shrimp tempura in the shrimp tempura was pretty tasty but you can barely taste it because of how much rice is in the roll. The spicy tuna roll was not spicy at all, barely any flavor.
The worst offender was the "eel cucumber" roll which would be better named the "cucumber eel" roll since it was 90% cucumber and 10% eel (see review picture). I understand their angle here, they want people to get full on rice and fillers and not order as much of the fish which is more expensive. That's a good business model but unfortunately it means the sushi is not very good. I also think it is slightly dishonest.
I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because there are some positives. The appetizers and hot food are not bad, the service is good, and the place is fairly clean. I didn't feel at all rushed here as I have at some other all you can eat places. And a big plus, they have ice cream. But I would most likely not come...
