I've lived on Staten Island for several decades and never really paid any attention to this place. I drive by it several times and on a whim decided to stop in (you know, YOLO and all that). The bakery is located on an enormous plot of land which led me to believe the inside would be just as sprawling. Uh, no. The inside of the bakery is like walking into a dive bar. Small, damp, poorly lit. I think my bedroom is larger than the storefront of this bakery. I did appreciate the friendly welcome from the ladies behind the counter as I perused the sweet-smelling delicacies somewhat haphazardly laid out before me. Their selection leaves a lot to be desired with one-two-three varieties of bread. I chuckled as to the poor selection of sweets and other "baked goods" - I ordered a chocolate and cinnamon twist and left. On my ride home, I decided to try the chocolate twist and I'm sorry I did, it was gross. Too sweet and the chocolate was, well, not chocolate. The cinnamon twist I had later with a cup of tea was the only reason why this review is 3/5 and not 1/5. It was...

There's no other place like it on Staten Island. It's the only bakery on the Island that gets my business. I'm Italian, however, I don't like Italian pastries (I know, how dare I???) because they're too sweet. And I get it, some people like they're sweets to be ... uumm ... sweet. But, if you're like me and you don't then Holtermann's is the place for you. They've been around for 142 years (LITERALLY, since 1878, I'm not making that up ... look it up!) and they're stuff is amazing. My favorite is the cream cheese meltaway. It's simply decadent. You can also get it with fruit, delicious, yes but the cream cheese is the way to go. Go there, I insist. BTW, be prepared to be to transported in to the mid-1960's. I mean that in a good way. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. BTW, I'm not a sweets guy, I rarely eat desert but if I see a Holtermann's box, it's...

The first time I came here was to show my support bc of the whole Whoopi controversary. I felt like I was 10 years old again, standing in my old neighborhood bakery and the only thing missing was the string. I purchased two shopping bags full of pastries and pies and of course had to try the charlotte russe.. WOW! Everything was fresh and amazing, even days later which is the true test of quality. Well, I was sitting in traffic on my way home to Long Island during the July 4th weekend and thought how wonderful it would be to enjoying some Holtermann's during my ride, so I stopped by again. This time I got two of everything I love; charlotte russe, lemon flips, jelly donuts, linzer tarts, assorted fruit danishes, a whoppie pie and a coffee. Again, WOW! This place is amazing and the staff is so friendly. I will be going back...

I used to live on Staten Island and when we moved to NJ, we loved stopping here before going to my Nana’s to grab pastries. Everything is so fresh and delicious just like I remembered. The donuts are so light and fluffy, filled to perfection! The cinnamon buns are delicious (especially when you warm them in the microwave for a few seconds!) definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area! They have a ton of cakes, pastries and pies to choose from!

Holtermann’s has been around for 150 years!! It’s an old time bakery with excellent bread and lots of other goodies! We purchased fresh Italian bread and made delicious crispy fried salami sandwiches. This was our second visit to Holtermann's and we were so excited when, this time, they had the Charlotte Russe! A popular dessert of the 1900's and Holtermann's still sells it.

I grew up in Brooklyn, in the ‘60s. A favorite memory was a 10cent pastry, called a Charlotte Russe. I moved to Wisconsin in 1982, but have family in NYC. I looked on the web , and seems like Holtermann’s is the only bakery still making them. I took two subways, a ferry, a bus, a train, and walked a mile to get to Holtermann’s. It was worth it. Tasted as good as I remembered.
