Iāve always long for a good bagel shop in Flushing. Iāve heard about this place but never got a chance to try or the times we attempted it was already closed for the day. While itās in Flushing, itās still pretty far for me at least to get to. I had to take the bus. I couldāve walked, but itās about 30 mins. . I wasnāt sure what bagels were available by looking at the shelves behind the counter. I didnāt plain (which is what I wouldāve got), so I got a plain sesame bagel ($1.95) and an everything bagel with cream cheese ($3.50). There is a menu board but most of it is blocked out, I guess they use to offer more spreads based on some of the google pictures. . There wasnāt a lot of cream cheese spread on the bagel but enough to coat it. I wouldnāt preferred more. Would have loved to have some scallion too. . The texture of the bagel was crisp on the outside and very chewy on the inside. I really liked the chewiness. The dough is on the denser side but I donāt mind it.. I personally love to rip the bagel and dip it into a spread, like how PopUp bagels are. . However, I canāt say I liked the taste of the bagel. Iām not sure what kinda of flour is used but it doesnāt taste the same as the ones in the city, or even the ones in the markets. Itās not a bad tasting bagel but itās not the taste Iām looking for in a bagel. If I lived close to this bagel, I would get it whenever Iām craving for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy son recently moved in down the street from JK Bakery and said "Dad. You have to try this place. They have the best bagels". Now, I grew up around Tuckahoe, Yonkers and NYC. I've had a lot of great bagels in my life. I never thought.. "you know where great bagels are made? Flushing." But it turns out that is exactly where they're made. I live in upstate NY now - near Albany - and it's tough to find a good bagel here.
But the ones from JK in Flushing... Hearty but not super crisp and overdone on the crust. Chewy on the inside. Not really big, and not small. And the flavors - you know a good bagel when you don't have to toast it. And these definitely didn't have to be toasted. I asked for a dozen. Six sesame and six onion. You get three more said the lady behind the counter. Cinnamon raisin I said. Oh, those are the best, replied the lady. Water bagels, she said. Look back there - those are the ones we're prepping today for tomorrow. Fresh every day. I threw in a few extra for you. I got home and found 17 bagels in my bag. I think I had three of them the first hour after I got home. You don't go here for sandwiches or lox or whitefish salad. They don't have any of that. You go here for great bagels with great flavor.
Anyway, if you can't tell - I highly recommend this place. I'll definitely be going back...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAfter a long time of wanting to try one of their bagels I finally gave it a shot and I must say I was very disappointed. I walked in and wished the staff a good morning to which I got no response. I then ordered an onion bagel toasted with vegetable cream cheese. I was told that they don't toast their bagels despite the fact that there is a large sign at the entrance that says "Hot Bagels". I thought they had their own cream cheese (like most bagel shops) and to my surprise they pulled a Philadelphia Cream Cheese container out of a refrigerator. I then wished them a good day and again received no response. The bagel was okay but nothing special. All in all it was a disappointing experience and I won't...
