I recently ordered a few gluten free items from this cupcake shop (because I have celiac’s disease) and my husband ordered some cake (not gluten free). Unfortunately, the store staff decided to pack everything in the same box which meant that I was not able to eat any of the items I ordered. For those that aren’t aware, when you have celiac’s and are exposed to gluten, over time it can lead to intestinal cancer.
While I never imagined that staff wouldn’t pack gluten free and non gluten free items together, this also resulted in my husband not being able to eat his cake. This happened because I ordered the gluten free cranberry bars that have almonds on them and my husband has a tree nut allergy. I spent over $50 for just a few baked goods. I should be able to expect for food allergies to be handled professionally, intentionally, and with the seriousness they deserve!
I decided to call the restaurant to talk to the supervisor and I spoke with Alex(andra) I believe although she and the gentleman that answered the phone were very cryptic and hesitant to give me her name.
I was very frustrated and attempted to explain to Alex that I was surprised they didn’t train their staff to pack gluten free items separately by default, to which she replied “Well, I don’t train anyone to do anything!” She then explained that could request a refund through the delivery service I used, which I explained I already had done. She then shared that they are very sensitive to food allergies, to which I responded that they clearly are not because the gravity of this mistake
It was clear to me that Alex did not want to hear my frustrated tone. When I tried to explain Celiac’s because I want to make sure others don’t have to get sick because of poor staff training, she said “You clearly seem very upset, so I’m going to give you some time to simmer down and let you call back tomorrow and speak with the manager!” And then, she hung up.
If you have a good allergy, I recommend you stay far away from this shop or you will...
Read moreUnfortunately based on my experience, the reputation of this place must be based on the quaint neighborhood location and local business factor, rather than the quality of the cupcakes.
My experience: I placed an order for pickup a couple days in advance, asking for customized cupcakes. When I made the order, I was asked to give a pickup time, with the expectation that after that specified time, I could enter the shop and retrieve my order. With these cupcakes being anniversary related, it was very important to me that the customization was performed accurately and more importantly on a timely manner.
My girlfriend and I showed up at the appropriate time and not only was the order not ready, I was also told there was no record of my order by one employee. Fortunately, the employee I made the order with over the phone was there and recognized my name and was able to confirm I did indeed make an order. After some digging around they found my box of cupcakes and disappeared for several minutes to complete it and to have the writing added to the cupcake.
In that situation, I found myself asking, why pre-order if it won’t be ready?
I was hoping that the cupcakes themselves would make up for the pickup fiasco. Yet again, I was disappointed. please see the pic below for the presentation (lackluster).
1 of the 2 red velvet was dry, though the other was okay. Both of the signature Brookyln Blackout tasted like store bought cake and were dry The strawberry was okay, though it did fall apart quickly. The vanilla was easily the best
I’m no cupcake extraordinaire , but i’ve had my fair share of delicious ones across this city (Sprinkles anyone?) and the world and this spot did not live up to its rep. Maybe I got it on a bad day? a bad batch? I’m not sure, but when I’m dropping ~$4 on a pre-ordered cupcake, I’m not going to...
