I wandered into Rico Pollo II on a humid Saturday afternoon, all sweaty from the long walk through Cypress Hills, but drawn by the bright yellow façade and the aroma of roasting chicken spinning in the open-kitchen window. The salt-and-spice scent hit me the moment I stepped in, and for a second I felt miles away from the city—more like I’d stepped into someone’s home kitchen in the Dominican countryside.
Inside, the place was warm—not just in temperature, but in mood. The staff greeted me with a friendly nod and a joke between themselves about “¿Quién está comiendo más hoy?” which I took as good omen. I ordered the pollo al horno with maduros and a side of rice & habichuelas. When it arrived, the plate was generous: the chicken skin crisp and caramelized, with a caramel-brown hue from the oven’s heat, the maduros sweet but not overly sticky, and the rice firm yet buoyant, holding its own.
As I ate, I noticed families chatting over big trays of food, kids laughing in a corner, elders discussing their day—or maybe their week. It felt lively without being chaotic. My first bite of the chicken yielded a faint crack of the skin, followed by juicy, well-seasoned meat. The sauce on the side (a house-madeji) offered a tangy contrast, and I found myself closing my eyes for a second, just savoring it.
What stood out: this was comfort food with intention. I wasn’t just grabbing a quick bite; I was sitting into a moment. The price was fair for Brooklyn, and I left with a doggy-bag in hand (the portions were plenty).
If I were to pick one thing to note: the interior decor is basic—functional, clean, but not fancy. If you’re looking for a polished bistro aesthetic, this isn’t it. But if you want honest, full-hearted food and a place that makes you feel welcome, Rico Pollo II does it wonderfully. I’ll definitely return next time I’m in the...

Read moreThis place has the worst service. The food is not consistently good at all. Always hit or miss. Last straw tonight was ordered rice, beans, chicken and plantains for $8.00. This is always the price when I go. If you get a meat and 2 side items, the price is $7.00. If you get an extra side they charge a $1.00 more.
I repeated my order twice and the lady I spoke to on the phone read it back to me. When I received the order which is usually in a Styrofoam lunch container came quite short. Chicken was in a small 4 ounce container and the plantains the same. They forgot my beans and rice.
Called to have order corrected and the lady lied and said I never ordered that, even though I said my order twice and she had read it back to me. Then she switched her story and said if I wanted all that it would be $11.00 and not $8.00 even though I have ordered before and the price is always $8.00. Tried to change the price to dissuade me from demanding the correction. On top of it ,I had my order delivered and she said if I wanted the other stuff I would have to walk there and get it. Then her co-worker got on the phone and continued with the same unprofessional ignorance and horrible customer service.
They need people with integrity, who know how to fix mistakes and problem solve, rather then lie and try to cheat people out of there hard earned money. They also need some staff who know how to communicate well in English. Lousy food, lousy experience, will not...
