Sat at the counter for the full omakase. Just about everything was great, but I wasn’t completely convinced it was a good value. My palate might not be good enough to discern the differences compared to other omakases I’ve had. Nonetheless, the highlights for me here, as I remember it:
baby squid with miso appetizer - Very fresh, with a nice springy texture.
ankimo appetizer - Cooked in wine, to give it a nice roundness in flavor. The texture was smooth and firm. Seemed more elevated compared to ankimo I’ve had in the past.
clear soup appetizer - It had a hint of smokiness that was a nice surprise.
golden eye snapper nigiri - To me, reminiscent of botan ebi, but a cleaner taste and not as buttery.
red snapper nigiri - In contrast to the golden eye, a more rounded taste and softer texture.
botan ebi nigiri - Always a favorite piece of mine, like a good egg yolk.
smoked baby barracuda nigiri - Flaked and melted in the mouth.
Hokkaido uni nigiri - Usually prefer Santa Barbara over Hokkaido uni because the latter usually tastes too briny or off to me, but here, there was just a nice brief hint of brine that gave way to that sweet custard.
toro-taku hand roll - Never had the toro-taku combination before, so while memorable for me, might not actually be that special. In contrast to negi-toro,...
Read moreIt's a great restaurant with great chefs and fresh ingredients. Five stars for the chef, the servers and the food. But last night I felt so sad that I met another two guests and was racially abused by one. The drunken white lady saw my Asian face and started asking me where I was from. I answered her out of courtesy, and she asked me how long I had been in the U.S. and what I was doing here. Since we were here to celebrate a birthday, my friend wanted to post pictures on social media to celebrate his birthday, so we took pictures of the food. This is with the consent of the chef. But then the white lady asked us why we were taking pictures, and said in a weird way that she had some Korean coworkers who liked to take nice pictures and post them online, and asked if we knew any Koreans. She said it was very un-American for us to take pictures. I could see her making a vomiting face after every course she ate and pointing chopsticks at people. I could also see her giving us Asians the middle finger. Nice to meet you Karen, if you and your white boyfriend can see this comment. I would like to say that you are really rude and I feel so offended, please be ashamed of your racist behavior. Please bring respect the next time you visit an...
Read more10/10! Excellent fish quality & variety, perfect experience if you are okay to overlook the no-frills/bare decor (definitely no frills!). The service was wonderful; chef is super nice & friendly.
Fish level & diversity on par with other high-end places like sushi zo, sushi kosaka, Noda, Yasuda, Shuko, etc... Everything flown in from Japan and we got no bad pieces. Had interesting cuts & fish — not just your salmon/toro/etc.. but also nodoguro, hirame cheeks, etc.. the uni was delicious.
They were super accommodative of our preferences (for example I like 50% rice and was no issue and they accommodated a scallion allergy). We were able to order extra piece à la carte after the omakase — ask the chef what he has special that day also and you can get that a la carte also.
It’s nice to finally have a solid sushi place in west village that’s perhaps a touch more casual/less rigid Given the no frills decor. If you care a little more about the setting then I recommend sitting at the bar. We sat at a table which allowed us more flexibility to get the smaller omakase + a bunch of a la carte pieces (and I’d probably do that again!) but I’d say the bar seats are definitely a nicer setup. We Will...
