I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this hotel, which I had previously trusted through my professional recommendations.
Upon going to sleep I became itchy and was covered in bites. These bites were like nothing I have experienced before. (My partner also had a rash and bites) Despite informing the hotel immediately, they did not offer any reasonable solution. They said they were completely booked and the only response we received was a suggestion to change the bed sheets, or they could book a new hotel for me using my own credit card—with no promise of reimbursement. There was no offer to clean our belongings, address the room condition, or help us in any meaningful way.
As a result, we had to cut our trip short, miss important work events, and rebook our flights home—at our own expense. The hotel then refused to refund one of the nights we stayed, despite the massive disruption to our trip and our documented discomfort. Although the hotel claims a negative bed bug test, something in the room clearly caused the bites and rash we experienced, and a test result doesn’t change the fact that our stay was miserable and we had to leave early. (The test they conducted to inspect the room as of 2024 has been reported to be 44% accurate at finding bed bugs) I’ve stayed at many hotels and have never experienced such a lack of care or proper handling of a serious situation.
I spoke with Patricia, the front desk manager, about this problem and her final response was that “the hotel takes matters very seriously and that they would have offered us another room if there was one available but they were sold out. It was your choice to check out.” I shared with her, I understand that the test came back negative, but regardless of the results, my experience cannot be ignored. Having numerous bites and discomfort was very real. This situation significantly impacted my work trip, personal plans, and finances, so I believe it's important to address the issue beyond just the test results. I’m not asking for compensation for something I made up—I’m requesting a fair resolution based on the real consequences of my stay. She said, “there is nothing else we can do”.
To anyone considering this hotel, be aware that they may not support you if something goes wrong, and they might not take responsibility for issues that disrupt your trip. I’ve included photos of the bites and I would strongly caution others against staying here based on my experience. I am extremely disappointed in the way that this situation was handled and the lack of accountability this...
Read moreHonestly, if I could give 4.5 stars, that would feel more accurate. We stayed on 10th floor towards back of building and this is a 2nd stay in a span of 5+ years. Pros: -Good location in proximity to sights, close to trains, easy to get cabs. -Lobby/lounge area by fireplace is beautiful, comfy, mostly quiet (bring headphones for "loud" talkers) for catching up on a bit of "work". -Coffee is good and they offered apples, dainty pastries, yogurt. -Room is comfy.. our room this time was spacious (again in the context of NY space), bedding was nice, furnishings were pretty, there was a table to work (but using the lobby was preferred for us). -The entire staff is stellar! Responsive, friendly, didn't give off odd vibes. I forgot a charging cord for my galaxy and they had one to use! -Clean... for an old NY building -Fairly quiet, conditionally. Our 10th floor room, towards "back" of building, was quiet and protected from doors slamming, elevators, no other "room" noises next to or above.
Cons: -2 bar/clubs adjacent to the hotel (but not directly beneath), and while 2 of 3 nights were quiet, one night was hoppin! which is fine if you want to be near easy access to a night out, but if we had stayed on a lower floor, I have a suspicion the noise may have kept us awake. -The usual NYC street noise, expected for this level of hotel in this neighborhood-- if you are super sensitive to noise, you will have to stay in the Uppers, or 5th/Park avenues in a luxury high rise, for around $1000+/night.. (just saying). Or bring earplugs just in case.. and ask for a higher floor. -The rooms/building is old and though clean, some of the structural parts of the room (closets, carpet) were definitely showing a bit of wear/tear as well as had an odor, the carpet in particular. I have a super sensitive smell.. I could smell the sour carpet when I lay down to sleep. But again... I have an annoyingly acute sense of smell, so another may not notice. The closets had an old, stale smell, and the room smelled like smokers had stayed there in the past. But again, me and my nose. And also, for about $350/night in NY, I didn't expect a penthouse fit for Madonna.
Overall, our stay was comfy, convenient, well-priced, and safe. I would highly recommend...
Read moreNegatives: the cleaning staff was at our door at 9 am everyday and if we didn’t have the do not disturb sign up then they were asking when we would leave. I’ve never experienced that at any other hotel and I’ve stayed at lots of them. They also stopped giving us toiletries after 4 days into our 8 day stay. It’s a bit expensive and the drinks at the bar are super expensive. Tao night club is below so if you’re staying on the lower levels then you’ll end up staying up until past 4 am when it closes. We were on the 8th level and heard cars honking all night long in front of the nightclub. It’s expected in New York but we’ve stayed in busier areas and didn’t have that much taxi noise outside of our window. The shower also never seemed to be cleaned and when we put some of our baby’s food and bottle in the fridge they emptied out everything but our few things from the fridge so we didn’t get cold sodas and juices if we wanted. There also isn’t an easy way into the hotel if you’re handicapped or have a stroller.
Positives: great location! It’s a 30 minute walk to several attractions and Chelsea Market is across the street. Definitely go there! The breakfast was okay but the drinks were delicious (better be for how much they cost!). The building itself is really neat looking and the inside looks like something Ernest Hemingway would love! It was super cozy and welcoming. The staff was incredible! The front desk was helpful and the doormen helped me carry my daughter’s stroller down the stairs daily. They use CO Bigelows toiletries and they are amazing. The bed was also amazing! It was firm but not too firm. I slept like an angel. They provide small pack n plays with sheets and towels for your baby as well. It’s really a very picturesque hotel. The rooms are small but it’s New York, we stayed in much smaller. Being small, we still had a table, two chairs, and a desk in our room with 2 adults and an infant. We had plenty of space. The coffee was delicious too! I would highly recommend staying here but if you want good housekeeping services then leave your...
