Twist Bar — Restaurant in New York

So I'm not usually one to write negative reviews but in this case i felt like i had to say something. My friend and i threw a birthday party here last month, initially thinking that this would be the perfect place to host an intimate gathering given the space, kind staff, and overall vibe.

While on the surface the party was well organized and fun, the behind the scenes reality was that we got taken for a ride by the staff and ended up having to pay a lot more than what was initially discussed. We had negotiated with the owner that we wanted to do a cash bar instead of putting all the spending on 1 credit card and had agreed to hit a certain minimum spend (inclusive of tip and tax)

However, after the event was over, even though the owner had confirmed that we successfully met the minimum spend per the contract we signed, he still insisted that we pay a sales tax as well as a 20% gratuity. This was after my friends and i had been tipping the bartender and wait staff generously all night for each drink. While i understand that bars implement the mandatory gratuity to protect their staff when 1 credit card is being used, it makes no sense to charge a mandatory gratuity when everyone is paying for their own drinks and tipping throughout the night.

We tried emailing/calling the staff several times after the event to figure out why we were charged so much and they kept saying that this was their policy and that there was nothing they could do about it. One staff member even suggested we dispute this charge with our credit card because they did not have any other reason to provide us.

I was hoping that this venue could set a precedent for intimate gatherings in the future, but sadly i don't think i will ever go here again after the experience my friends and i had. Please take this as a cautionary tale to avoid getting ripped off by a seemingly nice staff that is just out to take advantage of...
