MY FAMILY WENT TO WERK STATT at 509 Coney Island Ave,Bklyn,NY. RESTAURANT YESTERDAY. MY SISTER-IN-LAW IS severely ALLERGIC TO GLUTEN SHE ASKED FOR the CHICKEN LIVER AND WAS SERVED RYE BREAD WITH IT! SHE ASKED FOR SOME VEGETABLES A FEW CARROTS OR CELERY TO EAT WITH IT AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO SUBSTITUATIONS! Gluten free means gluten free ergo not served with bread. THE WAITER WAS SURLY! WE BELIEVE IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS GARANTEED A 20% TIP REGARDLESS OF HOW BAD HIS SERVICE WAS! The place is relatively expensive! The menu gave no description of the foods in depth. I ORDERED THE PAPRIKA CHICKEN WHICH WAS SERVED LUKEWARM (NOT HOT) AND CONSISTED OF A PAPRIKA CREAM SAUCE OVER TWO CHICKEN LEGS (VERY GOOD-SIZED PORTION) BUT NOT TO MY LIKING though the spaetzle was very good. The chicken WAS BLAND WITH NOTHING TO MAKE IT SHINE OUT IN ANY WAY! The chicken tasted as if it was boiled not baked IT WAS VERY REMINISENT OF AN INDIAN DISH OF CHICKEN TIKKA I’VE HAD WHICH IS ALSO SERVED WITH A CREAM SAUCE. My cousin and son enjoyed their hamburgers and a pretzel both of which are pretty hard to mess up. My brother got the fried veal cutlet, the onion soup was good, my wife got the pork tenderloin, my aunt got the chicken schnitzel. The risotto with brussels sprouts was ALSO very good. The chairs were very wobbly due to poor maintenance/loose screws which the owner manager changed for me! If one had broken beneath me this review would be much worse than it is so far. The last time I was there three or four years ago I must have had the goulash because I was told in truly clear terms that Jagger schnitzel with hunters’ sauce would never be served there as it is a German dish! I apologized immediately. It is an Austrian restaurant
The meal came out to $354.00 which included a $50 tip. Which really was not earned! It is unfortunate because my brother wanted to celebrate my 70th birthday and it just did not turn out as well for me as the last time I went there. The beer was good and the food for me mediocre. They only accept Amex or cash! From my past experience a restaurant that requires ONLY cash or AmEx cards only usually has/or had a cash flow problem and cannot afford the additional fees the other credit cards insist on. It also limits the clientele to those who have the cash on them to pay or in their bank. Amex pays its creditors in full every month from my past...
Read moreHad a really bad interaction with the manager so I will never go back here. My father has recently lost the ability to walk. I've been in the Army for 18 years now and come up to NY once a year to visit the family and we decided to eat here this year. I've also eaten here many times in the past.
When I got to the restaurant I informed the server that I would need to bring my father through the handicap access. I thought that would be as simple as just opening the door and wheeling him in as there was a ramp about 2 feet from the table we were seated at.
A few minutes later and the manager or maybe owner comes over to discuss my request. She starts saying that I didn't tell her that we would need wheelchair access when we made the reservation and had she known that she would have seated us somewhere else. I tried to just agree with her and offer an apology as if it was my oversight. However, she was incessantly complaining over and over about how hard it was going to be to figure out how to wheel him in and seat him. She just kept whining and complaining that we did not let her know.
I didn't know until recently what my father's limitations actually were because his health has deteriorated. Maybe she could have thought to herself for a second of how hard it must be for the family to deal with having their father in this condition and how that compares to this supposedly huge ordeal we were putting her through.
She just assumed that he must have been handicapped his whole life or something and that she was owed some type of explanation. What I didn't understand about the whole situation was it literally just came down to allowing us to open a door and wheel him in about two feet in under 10 seconds.
And to the auto response from the business in advance. Next time just complain to your co-workers. You come off as unprofessional, lazy and ghetto when you start touting, "we're just a small business" directly to the customer as you complain to them about having to do a little work. That's all it came down to, was a little bit of work that you didn't even have to do so I don't know what the...
Read moreEverything about this place takes me back home. My mum has Hungarian roots so the food I grew up with was all Schnitzel, goulash, chicken soup etc.
I have passed by Werkstatt so many times with the intentions of going in but have yet to find people to come with me. Finally, I pulled some friends with me and put my foot down. We're going to Werkstatt!
So we walk in and honestly, all bars look the same, but this one just felt like it was more European pub style. I was loving it. We were seated right away with menus and water right after.
Our waitress (Forgot her name but she's been there since they opened) was super attentive, nice and helpful with our decision of what to order. We settled with ordering some cocktails, wine, and for food we got the Chicken Soup, Chicken Liver Mousse, Goulash, Salmon, Side of Veggies and Side of Roasted Potatoes. For dessert we ordered Apple Strudel and another dessert, I forgot the name but it was great.
The chicken soup was so hearty and flavourful, I almost thought I was eating my mums homemade soup. The Chicken Liver Mousse was something else, almost like a dessert, so tasty and sweet. The goulash, omg the goulash! You must must get the goulash if you are here for dinner. The meat was top notch, absolutely phenomenal and instead of potatoes they used spatzel which gave it this awesome twist yet still incredible. Ah! Just thinking of it I want to run back and get some more.
The fish honestly reminded me of my mums salmon, it was so similarly cooked. Beautiful flavors in the spices they used to cook it in. Perfectly cooked at a medium temperature. I know I'm raving about this food, but honestly guys, this is what great food should be like. Not a single dish was left over or had any crumbs left on the plate.
I really enjoyed the dinner we had here and honestly can't wait to come back for more. Especially now that I'm 45% fluent in German :p Really guys. This is a must go to on your...
