We had a very poor experience at First Watch Newark on March 1, 2025. We were a party of 11 and joined the waitlist at 11:00, in which it said it would be a 15-20 min wait. We then arrived and checked in at the restaurant at 11:30, and were told it would be an additional 20 minute wait. I know wait times arenât always accurate so I understood. After 30 minutes, we approached the host asking how much longer and he said another 20 minutes. I informed him that we joined the waitlist an hour ago and it was way past the estimated wait time at that point. The host told me they were waiting for a few tables next to each other to open up. But that wasnât happening because we saw a few different tables near each other open up while we waited, and they were always sat with another group. Another person in our party then approached the host and questioned why it was taking so long. The same host then told this person in our party that they âdonât necessarily hold tables for large parties because then they canât seat other guests.â We noticed a few more tables available next to each other, but the host then sat other people there. At this point it was 12:22 when a manager approached us and said he could seat us. I said âwhere?â because at this point there werenât any tables near each other. He said âparty of 3 right?â And we said noâŚ.party of 11. He scrambled to move tables together, which was appreciated, but we didnât sit down until 12:32. 1 hour and 32 minutes after joining the waitlist (with an original wait time of 15-20 min). This was unacceptable, and we felt extremely dismissed by the host who told us âthey wonât hold tables for a large partyâ if it means they can seat a smaller party instead. It was shocking for him to say this. Additionally, the manager never apologized. When we finally sat down, the waitress informed us there wouldnât be any additional issues (I was hopeful of this because we were celebrating my cousinâs birthday and our experience was already tarnished). I ordered a farmhouse hash. My hash came out WITHOUT potatoes. A potato hash without potatoes. I gave the food back to the food runner and then the waitress came over and said it was her fault because she rang it in wrong. Iâm not sure how you accidentally ring in âno potatoesâ instead of âextra well potatoesâ like I asked for. The server told me to keep the rest of my entree and then brought back a plate of potatoes that werenât cooked how I asked (I asked for well done). Finally she brought over semi-well done potatoes, but at this point the rest of my entree was completely cold. Overall, this dining experience was incredibly disappointing. A party of 11 brings in a lot of money, and I felt like we were treated poorly by the host and the food experience wasnât great either. We were here to celebrate my cousinâs birthday, and I feel like it was ruined. I will not be returning.
Also I contacted First Watch about this a week ago and never heard back. Not...
Read moreA consistently good chain in a pretty busy area. You donât make reservations here, you call to put your name on the list and get a rough wait time. Note, though, that when you get to the restaurant, youâre checking in from the list, not being seated. We arrived 15 minutes after being told there was a 15 minute wait after checking in. Still, once your name is up, youâre seated and served quickly. This is a tight ship: your order is taken fast and you get coffee right away. Our food came quickly as well!
This place is BUSY: expect it to be loud and crowded, especially on a weekend! Parking can be a little tough for that reason.
Finally, the food: my whole party was very pleased. The fall specials were delightful! My grandma was especially happy that her eggs were cooked exactly the way she requested. As a vegan, my main option here is the superfoods plate with chia seed pudding and almond butter toast. Iâve had this every time Iâve been here and itâs consistently good and filling. The juices are great as well. The iced coffee is far more sweet and milky than it is coffee so keep that in mind. Overall great service and good food but be...
