Disappointing experience — Poor service, and mediocre food

I had the unfortunate experience of visiting "New Hwong Kok" yesterday, and I must say that I feel utterly deceived by their Chinese name, as it is the same as the famous "Good Mong Kok Bakery.” Unfortunately, the service and food at this establishment were far from satisfactory.

Upon perusing the menu, I was particularly interested in trying the dried fish and peanut congee, which was clearly listed. However, the cashier lady responded in a condescending manner, informing me that they only served one type of congee—century egg and pork congee—which wasn't even mentioned on the menu. Disappointed and unwilling to eat century eggs, I decided to explore other options.

I settled for an egg tart and the sticky rice in lotus leaf (Lo Mai Gai). It was less than $10, and I was prepared to pay for it using my credit card. However, my plans took an unexpected turn when the lady at the counter informed me that they had a minimum charge of $10 for credit card payments. This policy was not clearly stated anywhere in the establishment, leaving me feeling frustrated and inconvenienced.

Reluctantly, I decided to add half portion of the soy sauce chicken to meet the minimum charge requirement, which costed me another $12.

When I inquired about getting some minced ginger to complement the chicken, I was astounded by the response. The lady gave me one which is kind of small portion for half a chicken, so I politely asked if I could get another one. Then she curtly informed me that I would be charged an additional $0.50 for an extra serving, despite the fact that I had just spent $20+ and she’s well aware that I don’t have any cash with me. It was disheartening to see such a lack of flexibility and understanding when I could have just canceled the order instead of making extra purchase.

Finally, I arrived home and eagerly tried the soy sauce chicken, only to be met with immense disappointment. It was the most overcooked and dried-out chicken I have ever encountered in the SF Bay Area. The quality fell far short of expectations and left me wondering why I even bothered to spend my time and money at "New Hwong Kok."

In conclusion, my first visit to "New Hwong Kok" was an unpleasant experience marred by poor service, mediocre food, and an unmentioned credit card policy. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone seeking authentic Chinese cuisine or a pleasant shopping(dining) experience. It is clear that they have much room for improvement in terms of both their menu offerings, transparency regarding their payment policies and...

Be careful with your credit card payment, I took out some food in Freberry, my original store receipt total $23.43 became $623.43, call the shop the next day tried to speak to the manager, but told the manager was not in, I asked the manager’s directed phone number but could not , and told called back at 7:30pm, I called at 7:30pm, there were no answers, call again the next morning, the manager still not in. Not until in April, I went to the shop directly, requested to see the manager, but told they don’t have an manager but just employee and owner, requested to check their book keeping, I have to conduct several phone calls and went to the shop multiple times but never could speak to the manager nor owner, and they refuse to give me the direct contact. Even at the end I have got the $600 back, but the way they have conducted the business was not professional, is not Honest there was no way I could bought more than $600 in their shop, and there were a gap between their sale s book keeping , but if I don’t go back and insisted they check their record, then the $600 will never...

When we want bbq ducks, we come here to get them, but they also have bbq duck wonton noodles that’s inexpensive and quite tasty. We think this has new owner because most of the old workers no longer there or at least we don’t see them. Before COVID we could sit down and have a very nice and inexpensive dinner with the family when we didn’t want to cook. The kids would order bbq duck with rice and I and my wife would order roasted duck noodles soups. My son loves the wonton noodles here since he doesn’t like roasted duck much. Everyone is happy when we sit down here. Now, there’s no dine in, only to go. Last week we decided to order to go, although we don’t believe in to go soups because by the time we got home it’s no longer hot. Anyhow, the BBQ duck and wonton were still tasty, the noodles cooked just right although the soup didn’t taste as good as before but still good. The price went up as everything else but still cheaper than a bowl of pho or any other soup...

This review is for the Newark location. There's a Milpitas location that I normally go to and serves great tasting dim sum. I discovered this Newark location, which is closer to where I live, so I decided to give it a try. With the exception of the pan fried shrimp and chive dumplings I was disappointed. The shumai in Newark compared to Milpitas is almost half the size. The Milpitas shumai is juicier and better tasting as well. The Newark shumai is small and dry. It's also pricier than Milpitas. I also purchased steamed shrimp dumplings and steamed shrimp and chive dumplings. The dumplings are not as filled as the Milpitas location. I will stick with the Milpitas location moving forward even if it's further away. You would think if you have more than one location under the same name there would be a comparable product and quality control checks.
