This small, traditional style diner exceeded my measly expectations by far! I'd seen Chalet off 101 many times and never even had a second thought about giving it a shot. However, my husband wanted breakfast for dinner and there weren't too many places that offered breakfast all day, and Chalet did.
From the outside, it doesn't look very promising. A rather old, rundown building askew from its namesake, the outside could definitely use a little touch-up. However, I understand the already high expenses that accompany owning a business in a tsunami zone. The inside had the aroma of my grandmother's 19th century Victorian manor. Might not be very pleasant for some but for me it brought childhood memories.
Chalet offers an extensive menu with items ranging from breakfast to lunch to dinner. There's seriously something for everyone here! Oh, and the best part - breakfast is served ALL DAY!
My husband and I shared a bacon and cheese omelette with 3 buttermilk pancakes. Wow! Took me back to my childhood at my American grandmother's house! The eggs to make the omelette were super fluffy, and there was a ton of cheese inside and on top. It was also stuffed with so much bacon! Just how I like it. Their pancakes are made with a house recipe. They were sweeter than traditional cakes. It was only served with one ramiken of syrup with it was served hot which helped it go a long way. Absolutely excellent food.
Based on it's dessert menu and word of mouth, Chalet is renowned for its full dessert menu featuring nearly every single pie you can think of. I mean, there's a sign outside that reads "Pie House" so you know you can walk out without trying a slice. We grabbed a piece of peach pie (the fresh one, no bake) we intended to keep for breakfast, but the joke was on us because it was gone an hour later. This had to be one of the best sliced of pie I had ever had the pleasure of eating. I wish I bought the whole dang pie! Or at least tried other kinds.
Before I end my review I'd like to point out how lovely our waitress was. She never gave us her name so unfortunately I can't give her a shout out. However, her service was so swift and efficient I have to make a note.
I would definitely recommend Chalet to anyone whether you're staying in Newport or just passing...
Read moreToday for breakfast, we stopped in at Chalet Restaurant & Pie House. Oh my goodness! Upon walking in, the visual delights were SO tempting! Do NOT come here, if you are easily tempted or dieting. Mile high gluten free & gluten not free cakes, a pie list to rival any others, the bakery case full of homemade bear claws, cinnamon rolls, cakes, cookies & coffee cake!!! Tuesdays pie special was Banana Fudge! I wanted to get it BADLY but, I resisted...until I come back on another Tuesday. For breakfast, I chose the Oktoberfest Sausage, diced into 3 scrambled eggs, hashbrowns & a piece of their Blueberry Coffee Cake. The scramble was buttery & the beef that the sausage was made with, was obviously high quality. I couldn't contain my eagerness for each bite. The Blueberry Coffee Cake came hot with a dollop of butter. My anticipation was met with the most delicate, sweet, melt in your mouth, bite of the best coffee cake I have EVER had! The crumble on top was a perfect balance of smooth, sweet & crunchy. My fork glided through each & every bite until...oh no...it was devoured effortlessly & gone!! My dining partner had country fried steak, gravy, eggs, hashbrowns with sourdough toast, which he thoroughly enjoyed in complete silence! giggling The table next to us, had 3 Senior Citizens. One lady, (later introduced herself as Gloria) looked over at me & said I looked happy & like I was having a good day. This was before I even saw or tasted one morsel. We chatted like the best of friends, ends up Gloria was from Syracuse NY, visiting her Sister in Newport. We had the best conversation & come to find out, Glorias other Sister in Cincinnati & I share the same name, Eileen. Gloria & her husband both said that Gloria & her Sister Eileen can sit & not talk, just giggle, laugh & read each others minds. I told her I am the same way with my close friends & my children but, that I have no siblings. Gloria also said that her Sister Eileen was married to a world famous DJ named Peter C. Another similarity I shared with Eileen, as my former love was a DJ, but thats a story for another time. Enjoy the photos my lovelies & if you get real close to your screen, I guarantee, you will smell & taste, the most delicious, breakfast food, you'll...
Read moreI was really excited about this place because the food sounded somehow fancier than your average diner? But honestly it was nothing special. The idea is there, the execution maybe could be better. I tried the blueberry hazelnut pancakes with a Marionberry lemonade. The lemonade was in desperate need of a straining, the berry was so seedy it just got stuck all up in my molars and kind of ruined what was otherwise a very good and flavorful drink. The pancakes were decent for what they are but they were so big and so rich in flavor that I couldn’t finish them, and not in a good way. The hazelnuts themselves added no flavor in my opinion. It was just a very weird textural difference between the mush of the pancakes and the crunch of the nuts with no real flavor to the nuts, which there were a LOT of. The hazelnut syrup that came with it also just tasted of syrup, nothing special. My boyfriend got the chicken and waffle and he was disappointed in the portion size of the chicken. Overall it’s just another diner. Maybe if I had gotten something less desserty and more mealish it would’ve been better? The service was decent and I was pleased with the number of times our waters were refilled - very appreciated!! We did notice at one point some of the servers somewhat displace another customer in the middle of his meal though by asking him to move his entire table to make room for another party that didn’t even end up being seated. Seems weird you’d ask an already seated and eating customer to shuffle their entire table. If you can’t accommodate a party comfortably maybe you should either restructure the way your tables are organized (when not in use) or the party can wait a few extra...
