My family tried Mr. R for dinner. We walked in around 7:15pm on a Thursday to a completely empty restaurant. Staff were behind the counter and greeted us. After being seated the process for ordering was explained to us. We made our selections and the waitress returned to collect or our menu/order ticket. We had a couple questions on the mocktails, but before we could get them out she turned and walked away. We let it go thinking she would pass by again, but that didn’t happen. One of the things that wasn’t explained to us was that they would bring out everything we ordered at once. So our five plates emerged within minutes of each other. We had pork dumplings, ham croquettes, chicken wings, fried shrimp with wasabi aioli and pork ribs. None of the items had much taste other than the sauce they came with. The wasabi aioli was just dollop of mayonnaise with a hint of wasabi and the cheese sauce that came with the wings looked like it had been sitting under a warming lamp. The wings were over sauced and the ribs extremely over sauced. The ribs were cold and we sent them back. I had to raise my hand to get the waitress attention because she hadn’t returned. Admittedly she did ask how everything was, but it happened as she was delivering the food and there wasn’t an opportunity to have sampled anything. About five minutes after the discussion around replacing the ribs with a fresh order, she returned to let us know she was going to ask the kitchen for a new order. At that point we asked for them to cancel the order and give us the check. We were only at the restaurant about 45 minutes total. It was an unfortunate experience. The menu is creative and fun, the facility is very nice, but the execution is broken. The restaurant scene in Newport is too competitive to not perform better, especially for a place that not downtown and wouldn’t normally benefit from foot traffic. I’m glad we tried it. I had high hopes, but unfortunately will...
Read moreWhoever have read my Google reviews know that I am so foodie and I love good food! So let me tell you this: Mr R is WOW RESTAURANT! The taste of the food is beyond exceptional! Chef Andrea outdid himself putting this incredible menu. Oh boy the staff, the owners sons are so busy making the clients feel comfortable to enjoy their experience, the service was amazing with these beautiful waitresses so cute and good energy. I enjoyed my pulled pork dumplings, sooo good, loved to the shrimp with the calabrese sausage dumplings, lambs skewers, burger and Waygu are the best for meat lovers like me. Let me tell you about the drinks, beside bringing our own favorite wine, we were served a fresh , exquisite non alcoholic cocktail in a cute glass by the GM the New Yorker James with his sweetness. Aww how I can put last the dessert?! So last but not least try the Japanese pancakes balls with Nutella and Strawberries and the Matcha tiramisu yum! Thank you for the kitchen staff and big applause for serving me the best fusion street food ever in Newport! I definitely recommend this place and I can’t wait to have another occasion to dine their...
Read moreAfter attending a local festival, my companions and I couldn’t decide what we wanted to eat, but thanks to Google we found Mr.R, which offers a fusion of Asian, Italian, and American foods.
Upon entering, you get a fusion vibe of retro diner and hipster chic. We were immediately greeted and seated by a member of the staff. We were given one menu to share and a small red stamp for stamping the items that we wanted. I did enjoy the stamping process.
The food came out much quicker than I anticipated and after the first plate arrived, new dishes were arriving every 3-5 minutes.
The dumplings arrived first. They were tender and flavorful and had just the right amount of chili oil. My only wish was that they provided an even number of dumplings so they could be shared evenly. The bok choy was delicious and had a hint of sweetness that paired well with the salty, crispy Asian wings.
Our server was friendly, and the staff thanked us for coming and said goodbye as we left.
If I’m ever in the area again I’d like to eat here again since I imagine that the menu...
