Perhaps I'm the idiot for not knowing how this place "works?" Start by entering any one of around 4 doors before you find the correct one. Enjoy awkward stares from patrons. Stand politely at a counter with menus in a rack. Wait patiently. Enjoy 5 young ladies in uniform drinking beverages. Wait patiently. Say "Hello?" Have a lady acknowledge you with "yes?" Say you have a question. Enjoy the sarcastic, meant-to-be-funny-but-isn't-because-I-don't-know-you-and-you-are-really-loud "Oh no! A question?!?!" Mention politely that you are here to eat breakfast and would like to sit down and so. This is where I got stymied. I was told you take a menu (from the rack provided) and stand there looking at it until you decide what you want. At that time you then tell the lady what you want and go sit down anywhere and your food will magically arrive at some point in the future. Take menu. Look at person you came with and say "we're aborting this mission, right?' return menu to rack. Depart. Drive to Middletown. Enjoy a delightful breakfast and cheerful folks at a Diner. The food we say at Cru looked really nice as the people eat it staring at you from five feet away while you read a...
Read moreI hate to say this, but I still feel ill just thinking of the chicken sandwich and salad with chicken which my husband and I shared. They REALLY need to specify that they only use dark meat chicken for the sandwich and on the salad. I personally find dark meat very heavy and fatty. Also, they list the sandwich with avocado, but it is actually guacamole; which are 2 different things. The guacamole added to the heaviness of the sandwich. Now for the “Straight from the pulse” salad. WAY too many ingredients that don’t go together. The menu describes it with mushrooms, peppers, spinach and avocado as some ingredients, all of which I assumed were raw as I would want in a salad. The spinach and mushrooms were cooked and cold, the peppers were roasted peppers, and AGAIN the avocado was really guacamole. YUCK!! It was the heaviest salad I ever had. Make a salad with fresh ingredients and don’t randomly throw together everything you can think of that don’t go together. I’m sure they do this because it’s easier. I’m sorry to say that Siri g our 4 day stay in Newport this was our worst meal. It’s a great atmosphere, with very nice staff, but sorry…I’m there...

After spending several hours at the Breakers and Elms, we looked for a place to grab lunch. Not too far of a walk from the Elms (maybe 15 minutes, max), is Bellevue Plaza--and there you'll find Cru Cafe.
This place wins on all three levels: the food tastes incredible (both breakfast and lunch), service is fast and personable, and the atmosphere is unique, immersive, and welcoming. The open-doored entry helps bring the "outdoors" indoors, so whether you dine inside or outside, you feel like you're in an open-air space. There's a lot of fun decor to soak up--including green plants to help soothe the mind. There are bathrooms and complementary Wi-fi, not to mention an outdoor picnic-bench area where pets are welcomed to join in the fun.
The food is excellent. Everyone in my 4-person party ordered something different and we all agreed on the quality, flavor, and portion sizes being on-point. You can order breakfast or lunch, as well as enjoy a wide selection of bakery items (muffins, coffee cake, scones, "handpies," and more). I highly...
