We have been fans of Chef Thiago for a few years, watching many of his competitions. We were ecstatic when we saw SALT would be opening in a location less than two hours from our hometown Keene, NH. Finally had the chance to visit and we were not disappointed in the least. Salt is a quaint little bakery with a fun ambiance. The counter staff was very pleasant, helpful and friendly. Every single treat looked incredible! We ordered many: croissants, pain au chocolat, a chocolate chip cookie, lemon tart, chocolate caramel tart, dulce de leche donuts, oreo eclair, and tiramisu. Pain au chocolat was delicious. Creamy, high-quality chocolate in a beautifully flakey pastry. I've been dying to try pain au chocolat for years, this was a treat! Croissants were buttery, flakey, crispy, and so airy with all their beautiful layers you'll feel as though you barely ate anything. Which is great, less guilt ;) The chocolate chip cookie was a real treat. This is not your standard cookie! Loaded with flavor and chocolate. Lemon Tart was beautifully balanced with the silkiest lemon filling. Perfect amount of sweet and tart. Oreo eclair had a fantastic elevated oreo flavor. Even had a bit of crispness on the outside to mimic the cookie. Dulce de leche donut was PERFECTLY fried, crispy just on the outermost layer, and soft on the inside filled with a delicious filling. You would be worried it'd be to sweet, but again, perfectly balanced. My husband described the tiramisu as "glorious" I can't wait to try the chocolate caramel tart later. I'm not a big fan of darker chocolates and was so excited to see this had milk chocolate! Honestly, for a bakery outside of boston, I think this place is very reasonably priced for the quality of the items and ingredients used, all of the above including a drink and duplicates of some of the items was $120 with tip. Easily this would be well over $200 at most bakeries I've been to. We walked out with four boxes! We love trying bakeries but almost always find the items to be better looking than they taste. Not so at salt! Your eyes will be delighted but your taste buds will be even more so. We will absolutely be back. You can see and taste that salt is a labor of love for Chef Thiago...
Read moreUnfortunately I don't have good things to say about what I had. It was my first time here and I ordered a pear tart, a cannele and a Choco chip cookie. I started eating the most subtle taste, so here it was: Cannele had a good structure and size, of course, but tasteless. I know it's a super delicate batter, delicate and subtle taste. But in this case tasted nothing. Crispy on the outside as it should be, but tasteless on the inside, sadly. Pear tart disappointed me the most. There was no glaze/no shinny on top of it (which would have awaken my instincts to have a huge bite!). Pear itself was dry and crispy as I had it from the produce department. I think it would look neatest if no skin, but there was a skin. From the inside: not even a trace of frangipane, sadly again. The bottom layer was kind of an airy but structured type of cake (don't know the exact name of that batter) that had a good texture, but no taste at all. The only thing I liked on that was the crumble on top. Choco chip cookie: it didn't look that beautiful, but the good thing was the crispness on the outside and softness inside. Good chocolate chunk quality, apparently. Sweet. Too sweet. So sweet it scratches the back of your throat. The colour was of a rich dark brown. At the first sight all looks fancy and cozy. Friendly staff. There are tables and you can sit and drink a nice espresso while you try some of the treats (table side was too close to the pick/pay area, which makes it a little noisy). There's also a huge parking lot right across from it. There were also types of bread as baguettes, sourdough and kind of a good-for-making-toast size brioche. I wouldn't recommend. Don't think it worths a try for now. (I hope I had a better light for the pics I have to show you. Promise to make it better...
