Zebra Striped Whale — Restaurant in Newtown

Unsanitary, overpriced, and unkind. I want to preface this by saying i think their ice cream tastes good which is why I stopped in today. I asked for a single scoop of ice cream with one topping in it, it was $7.26. way overpriced for that amount of ice cream. the people before us ordered an ice cream with 2 toppings and they made the mistake of charging him for one and the older man there said “they got 2 toppings, ring them up for another topping separately” as that group of people was leaving. they had to turn around and pay for it which is totally fine cause that’s what they ordered but the tone and manner in which it all happened was off putting. if it’s the stores mistake you don’t chase someone out the door for less than $2. the store also let a unmasked couple walk into the store and get within 6 feet of other customers, so being covid safe clearly isn’t a priority. the worst part of their neglect for covid restrictions & overall lack of sanitation was that the girl who made my ice cream scooped it without gloves on and then unwrapped the kit kat’s, broke them up and spread them into my ice cream with her bare hands. When i asked her “are you touching my food with your bare hands?” she looked genuinely shocked and said “Yes.” i had to then ask her to remake my ice cream with gloves on. I was shocked that there was no apology and that they would allow that to happen there. in the current climate and also being a place that serves food you think they would care the bare minimum. What a quaint and quirky little find!

This place has all the workings for a late night sweet treat! Right on State Street with all the other action in Newtown. We travelled from Philly to nom at this joint - well worth the trip!

Inside, it opens up to decent seating. Walking in, to the right is where all the ordering takes place, starting with the coffee bar, then towards the ice creams, and last to the crepe station. Once the counter finishes, there's seating of different sized stables and couches in the back. There are also small tables on the left hand side across from the ordering bar towards the front, right after entering.

It was my first time there, so it took a while to make a decision (since everything looked so good), and even though the place was quite busy, the girl we had at the counter worked with us to answer all the questions. In the end, I think we ended up with a great choice!

The place has options for ice cream, froyo, coffee, and of course - the sweet crepes! The portions are huge (and more than enough for two.) We ordered the ZSW Whirlwind crepe (topped with cookies and creme ice cream) - what a delight!

We also ordered drinks - I ordered their chai. It was warm and had hints of spice, perfect compliment to the sweet crepe.

What a cool place this is! When you walk in, the aroma of warm waffles and sweet cream wafts through the air. Candy jars tease children in line, waiting to make their treat selection. Behind the counter, the flavors of ice cream, shakes, smoothies, sundaes and other treats are displayed on boards over the back wall. The staff greets you warmly, and eagerly takes your order committing it to memory. Books written by the owners line the waiting area along with souvenirs, peaking customer interaction with interest. There is a small seating area, too small for the amount of customers this place draws, but it is cute and comfortable for the occasion. My husband and son split a crepe vanilla nutella sundae, which they happily devoured. My daughter enjoyed a chocolate dipped waffle bowl sundae, which was a bit too large for her. My father and I split a sweet Belgian waffle sundae. The waffle and crepe arrived perfectly hot, the icecream, tasty and cold, and the hot fudge was just right for a fresh sundae.
