Well I have been going to Captains Choice for several years, and through several owners and never had a problem. I ordered fish and my wife usually orders the same. This time she order a Seafood Fettuccini and I noticed she had pushed her plate away and it did not seem she had eaten very much of it, for about all she could eat was the few pieces of seafood. I asked her what the problem was and she said it did not taste good at all, but she does not complain much. I on the other had tried the dish and had to get the food out of my mouth, the sauce was runny and I tried one of the scallops in the dish and it seemed not fully cooked and the meal was very bad, and horrible. I shared my meal with her because the fish was good. I brought this up with the waitress and she asked if she could bring us anything else and I said I would share my meal with my wife. She came back with a very rude attitude and said they would still charge us for the meal because my wife ate all of the seafood, which was not more than a handful for such a good size plate of noodles. I looked at her dumbfounded and said that was the only thing she could eat and I had to ask my wife what the problem was and that was after she pushed the plate away. I made it very clear that if I had to pay for that meal fit only for denizens of the four legged variety I would not be coming back, and with more attitude she said "Well don't come back then". I would assume that when a customer has an issue, the manager or owner would resolve the issue, which does not seem to be the case at this establishment. Well it does have the two main ingredients for a soon to fail business; Bad customer service and Bad food. Looks like it is Good Bye to Captains Choice and Hello Fishermans Grotto. There are too many seafood restaurants in the Coos Bay area for one owner to allow that type of...
Read moreWe came in the evening of September 17,2022 for the last time unless things change. I really hate to do this and it took me a couple of weeks to write this. I was really wanting fish&chips tonight but ended up settling on Chinese food instead. We used to order from Captains Choice at least twice a month (sometimes twice a week because we loved the food so much) and used to rave about this place but the past few months the food has been awful! I don’t know what they did but the fish isn’t fresh, the tempura batter is not tempura, I don’t know what kind of batter was used but it looked like the scrapings from the bottom of the deep fryer (it was absolutely disgusting), the fried shrimp was not deveined (no excuse, that’s just gross) and they changed the tarter sauce which I loved. It seems as though you guys got a new cook and it was an absolute mistake. I do want to say the waitresses are phenomenal just as they always have been but unfortunately because of the food we won’t be back for some time. Also I don’t know who the cook was when we came into order but I witnessed a waitress apologizing asking for an extra piece of toast for a customer and he rolled his eyes and said ughhh. The answer should have been absolutely coming right up! The waitress shouldn’t be scared to ask the chef for anything. I added a picture of our food that night for reference. This is the second time I’ve received fish that looked and tasted horrible in the past few months. Everyone that tried it spit it out and it was a waste of $80. I’m not asking for my money back I’m asking for the quality to come back. Please go find...
Read moreLet me start by saying this place gets 5 stars based on being "a place after my own heart". They have a dish called the Big Dipper. It's a 1/2 lb. burger patty halved, served on a not overly toasted roll with Au Jus for delicious dunking. The sandwich consists of all the delicious things you'd find on a bacon cheeseburger. I elected for just the patty and bacon because as I have said in previous reviews "there's no need to church up a sandwich you dip". The Big Dipper left this stoner full and happy. My wife who has just now started eating fish enjoys their blackened lemon-pepper Halibut. The great thing is they'll cook fish almost any way you want it. Speaking of fish, if you have a small child with an attention span that's that of a goldfish then you're in luck. They have a fish tank with some fish that can occupy what little attention your child might have. I think I heard "Dad it's a Nemo fish" about 100 times give or take a couple dozen. There's also a pufferfish that affords you endless Finding Nemo quotes including but not limited to "Sharkbait Ooh Ha hah". If you go you'll leave full and happy. If you go with kids you'll leave full and slightly traumatized by reliving the memory of watching Finding Nemo until you lost count or hope,...
