Driving through the northwest corner of Connecticut on a sunny Sunday morning, I began to crave a sweet sip of an iced McDonald’s coffee with caramel. I made my way to 18 Main Street with my mobile order ready, eager to get my hands on Ronald’s sweet nectar, and to my delight, the drive thru line was completely empty!
Despite the lack of other customers, I still had to wait my allotted time before a muffled voice (maybe the Hamburgler) barked out “will you be using the mobile app?”
The employee explained through the distorted speaker, sounding like a mixture of Charlie Brown’s parents and Wall-E, that the order was never received by the store, but he was willing to still make it for me. I pulled around the corner and waited at the first window, expecting to receive a receipt that will undoubtedly live in the depths under my drivers seat for the next several months, but alas, the cashier was standing a few feet in front of me, enjoying a smoke break while still talking on the drive thru microphone. Unsure of how to proceed, I slowly inched forward to the second window, by now practically salivating for the clown man’s caffeine dream. To my surprise, there is nobody at the second window either!
“Maybe it was the Hamburgler taking my order,” I thought to myself after a few minutes. Just then, the one known worker abruptly finished her smoke break and rushed inside to the drive thru window.
The relief I felt knowing that I would finally receive my coffee was surely similar to how OJ felt when he was acquitted.
But no…
Our heroine, with her cape displayed backwards, came to our side to let us watch her make a large iced coffee for herself, before disappearing to the back.
The little hope I had left just dwindled away. I felt at this point that I may never get my Sunday morning sips of caramel. Then suddenly a man turned the corner with his arm raised out, for the first time I get a glimpse of my coffee…. A medium.
I once again explain my order to the employee, who no longer sounded like he was talking through a telephone on Mars. He reaches back, grabs a large cup, dumps the original drink into the cup, and tops it off with another squirt of coffee.
My drink was finally made, a different color than I had ever seen before, but there it was. A sort of saddle brown beverage was handed to me, unwilling to push back further and delay my happiness.
I drove off, remarking on the obscurity of the visit. When I finally put my lips to the straw, expecting a sip filled with the caramel that collects on the bottom of the cup, I’m shocked to taste the bitterness of black coffee.
One Star.

Read moreI would have given this place no stars, I guess that is not an option. I stopped in about 8 am today for breakfast and an employee was outside. I asked if the bathroom was available, and he said yes, if you wear a mask. There were no signs on the exterior door about the bathroom not being available. I used the bathroom then went to the front counter where no one was stationed. I said "Hello?" to see if anyone was working and a black female employee came out. I was ready to order and she asked me, "Did you use the bathroom?" I said yes and that the young male employee told me that I could if I wore a mask. She said, "Can you read this sign that says no bathrooms?" I was taken aback and restated that I had asked the young male employee and he said yes, if I wore a mask. She asked again confrontational tone if I could read. Never did she say that the young man had no authority to grant access to the bathrooms. Now I was hot. I told her "F U, forget the order and I got into my car. SHE FOLLOWED ME OUT TO MY CAR AND SHOUTED AT ME, "F U!" She also told me the police were outside. She was joined by an older man who must have been the manager and they both were cursing me out, threatening me with the police and told me don't come back, etc. I am sorry my response to her rudeness and ignorance was so base, however, a mistake was made by another employee granting me permission to use the bathrooms. Why were the bathrooms closed? They had counter service, so COVID could not be the excuse. That's it for me and Mickey D's. One bad franchise owner and their subpar employees sullied that chain for me for life.
